| I think the noise level in the Olympic stadium now is going to be the loudest ever in this country. Jessica Ennis is undoubtedly the pin-up girl of the British team, and such a deserved Gold medal. |

| Awesome is an overused word but that really was. The reception for the whole 800 metres was like nothing I have ever heard. |

| Awesome maybe an over used word Jock but tonight I don't think there's any other word to describe what the British athletes are treating us to! |

| The Long Jump final has been terrific also, and looks like landing GB another Gold. |

| Brilliant night. Mo Farah just looked so cool while the Africans were trying to disrupt him. To beat the Kenyans/Ethiopians over a long distance is amazing. And Greg Rutherford, a ginger winner |

| Shame about the football but as we all know, penalty's just aint the British way of doing things.
Brilliant day though with more to follow!

And Greg Rutherford, a ginger winner Agreed, they've dominated the long distances for so long. 3 golds in an hour is brilliant. Just seen the GB football team lose on penalties. Now there's a shock, not. |

I agree. It's one of those day's where you wished you'd have been there and witnessed it all and savoured the atmosphere. |

| I didn't realise how big a percentage of the Gold Medals won by GB have come from private school educated people. Now that the Games have been such a success it is time for people to put pressure on the Government to address this. Make sport accessible to everyone and improve sporting facilities in all schools. To risk losing the next crop of sporting greats because they attend an inner city school in a deprived area is criminal. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

It has always been thus. I suggested on another thread that natural talent could be identified by visiting all schools and offering free taster sessions. Those identified as naturally gifted in any area could then be nurtured but it would require considerable investment and employing the right people. A bit like Argyle really |

| As an Olympic 'sceptic' even I was fixed to the telly last night watching these magnificent performances. Well done all!
As for the football, well, miserable failure was expected anyway. |

| So, what was that about us only being any good at the "sitting down" sports again? |

Between 1979 and 1997, 10,000 school playing fields were sold off for development. If State schoold don't have the facilities for sports any more, they aren't going to produce the top-class sportsmen of the future. |

Mrs PP has accepted that the sofa will have a deep indentation of my arse. She has said she will dust me from time to time over the next week. After last night's brilliant efforts however, she may well be next to me! As someone said, awesome is an overused word, but it describes perfectly Team GB's efforts. |

| Ben Ainslie's just won another Sailing Gold; I know that's not really news, since he wins Gold at every Olympics he participates in |
