What a start by Jessica Ennis. A world best time for the 100m hurdles by a heptathlete.

And who was it who suggested she was fat or carrying too much weight? Some tubby middle-aged tw@ in a suit who gets out of breath running a bath.

Apparently that time would have got gold in the 100m hurdles 4 years ago. Just goes to show what a fantastic run that was.

That's incredible, and not bad for a fat lass.

The cycling is bloody good, okay we're the best there but it certainly is a thrill a minute and the races come thick and fast.

I'm watching the women's footy at the moment. Looks like Brazil are on their way home as they're losing 2-0 to Japan with 12 minutes left.

Pendletons just got another gold too.

I'm fecked if I can figure it out though - they've just followed a bloke on a bone-shaker around the track at snails pace for about 6 or 7 laps, (WTF?) and then actually race fir two laps.... scratch

Weird.

Just back (in Uxbridge already!) after an amazing night at the Olympic Park.

The stadium is an awesome sight inside, with wonderful sight lines. The atmosphere was electric, right from the off, but it reached an amazing zenith with Jess's performance in the 200m. What a moment when we saw the score and then the final standings at the end of the first day's events.

Everywhere you looked, happy and dazzled faces looked on. Sport is truly better than reality.

Then the exit and the journey home - the potential was there for it to be an ordeal - but no, even with double the attendance compared to Saturday when I was there for the swimming, it was a breeze.

We truly have pulled it off, so far...

Hats doffed. 80,000 would agree.

Because you got tickets for the athletics, you're a jerk.

I applied every time for every athletics ones I could afford, ZILCH.

I'm sure I'll enjoy the judo, mind.

I'm loving the sports but as with much in life it's definitely the middle class games. Forget getting a "cheap" seats for anything but if you can afford £100 to £1000 plus you had chance with luck this week to get seats to almost anything.

It all started in the lottery when those who could stacked their baskets with thousand upon thousand worth of tickets.

Heck they even took the marathon away from the relatively deprived East London streets for the photogenic holiday brouchure marketing looks of Central London.

Small gripes in the scheme of how things are successfully turning out.

Perhaps if football was an educated chaps game we'd be more successful at that too.

I think that's a bit unfair really Iggy. There may have been medals for the rowers, the equestrians, the sailors etc. but two silvers in Judo to pretty down to earth women, there may well be medals for, athletics cycling, boxing and plenty of other sports that are accessible to everyone, and whether some people find it happy clappy or whatever, every British competitor has remarked about the atmosphere and support the crowd have generated, and I have found myself rowing the last few yards, still knackered and having a lie down to recover, and generally getting excited over almost every sport.

I must be getting soppy but when you see some of the British competitors crying because they have "failed" the country by only getting a silver or bronze, just shows how much these people want to win, not just for themselves but for the country. The rowing pair who were just pipped at the end by Greece were distraught, and John Inverdale was having to carry on to camera clearly choking back tears himself because he has got to know the pair well. Some people might say that it was a bit contrived or good TV, but I think he was genuine and really upset.

Watching the young lad sprinter against Asafa Powell, Adam Gemili, who was playing non-league football last season, makes you realise that in some events there is nothing stopping anyone taking part in sport. If you are naturally fast as a runner you can have coaching for technique and starting, but the main thing you need is raw speed.

In China athletes are flogged to death in an effort to win gold medals, to show the world what a fantastic country China is. I would hate to see what happens to the thousands of athletes who fall just below the top level.

Since day one I have been glued to most of it and Britain's success so far has been brilliant. I'm sure I'm being biased, but I haven't enjoyed an Olympics as much as this one, and it's not even half-way through.

Yes it cost Billions and we're in the middle of a recession, but this will surely inspire a generation who are not used to picking up a football and spending the day in the park, or a tennis racquet or joining a sports club of some kind, rather than sitting in their bedrooms playing Playstation or X-Box. Along with Bradley Wiggins Tour de France win, the games success will be felt for a long time to come.

trouble is , the x box generation will still be playing x box and not watching the sport.

we have no tv in our house, so have managed to missit all, x box kids dont watch tv either, so i fail to see how this will transpose into more kids playing sport.

its great for us middle aged wannabes , too far past it to be able to play again, we can say 'int it great', the kids dont watch it and dont care.

certainly not worth every (bit of public) penny, imo

id say the money wuold have been of better use in giving some to each and every school to buy back some land so they can actually teach sport at school. as dougie says, the tickets arent cheap and none of you have got tickets for the sport you wish to watch

For a loud-mouthed, drunken, mindless Scot you don't half talk some spot-on sense, Jock. Much more of that and I will have to change my opinion.

The vibes I have picked up from various places, including friends have been almost enough to get me to get a tv license and watch the rest of the games. (Or maybe just connect the one I do have up to an aerial). I love the athletics and I'm missing watching the running, especially. But all of it sounds exciting to a whole range of people and I'd enjoy watching all of it.

The only people who I hope don't get inspired are the bloody cyclists who are a pain on the roads around here.

I haven't read your post mate, don't have time, but that statement was said with my tongue firmly in my cheek and was aimed at the people that keep banging on about how elitist the games are.
