Cut and paste job.

Plymouth Albion: Sacked head coach Graham Dawe had to pay to watch final match

By heraldphil_s  |  Posted: April 23, 2016

INCREDIBLE: Graham Dawe had to pay to get into Brickfields for their final home game of the season

Comments (3)
SACKED Plymouth Albion head coach Graham Dawe paid to get in to his side's National One game against Hartpury College at Brickfields on Saturday.

Dawe was dismissed from his role - which also included the position of director of rugby - by new owners Bruce Priday and David Venables last Sunday.

The former England man, who had taken Albion to the brink of National One's single promotion spot this season, spent the first 15 minutes after he wandered through the entrance gates at Brickfields talking to well-wishers.

Albion's squad then warmed up in front of the Redrow stand wearing tops with "Dawe" on the back and number two, the former director of rugby's playing number.

Many wore Graham Dawe cardboard masks after the match had finished.

Albion's new owners have so far declined to talk to the Herald about the reasons why they sacked former Bath and Sale player Dawe, or what their plans are for the club.

In response to Dawe's sacking, his backroom staff have also announced they will leave the club.

The team was looked after against Hartpury College by team manager Simon Hicklin, who announced his decision to leave late last week, and captain Jake Murphy, who is sidelined with a broken hand.

ANOTHER week, another seven days of silence from the new owners of Plymouth Albion, messrs Bruce Priday and David Venables.

From day one, when the two businessmen cancelled a press conference after taking over the club, Albion's owners have been dodging the media.

Instead of doing face-to-face interviews with all and sundry explaining how they are going to guide Plymouth Albion into a new golden age, as you'd expect, the new boys have relied instead on 'press statements' which, of course, they can't be questioned on.

The announcement of director of rugby Graham Dawe's sacking came, not from the new owners, but from the man himself, who held a media conference to explain what had happened, something the new chaps have not felt the need to do yet.

Personally, I'm getting to the point where I don't care one way or the other whether I ever get to speak to either Mr Priday or Mr Venables.

It's the fans I feel for. At the beginning of the week, I had a heartfelt letter from one of them, a Mr Rob Conway, who wanted some questions answered.

So, one more attempt. Mr Priday and Mr Venables, here are some of the questions you would be likely to face had you held a press conference, open to everyone from the media:

1. In this week's match day programme, you say you want Albion to be a 'very solvent club in the Premiership by the time we reach our 150 years celebration in 2026'. How, exactly, do you intend to achieve that? How much, in round terms, have you put into Plymouth Albion?

2. Why did you feel the need to put Albion into administration, then buy the club the second the ink was dry on the paperwork at the High Court?

3. Given that debts are wiped out when any business goes into administration, how much did creditors lose?

4. Why was director of rugby Graham Dawe, who built a team capable of winning promotion to the Championship next season, sacked from Plymouth Albion? And why did you not relay that information publicly UNTIL Dawe released a statement informing people he had been dismissed?

5. What on earth was the point of then saying you wanted Dawe back in the future, having sacked him? It's hard to think he'll return to Albion, having been dismissed with two matches of the season remaining for doing precisely nothing wrong.

6. Who is going to take over from Dawe as director of rugby/head coach next season? Who have you got in mind who could do a better job with few resources than Dawe?

7. Is there any truth in a persistent rumour Plymouth Albion will, in effect, be a nursery team for Exeter Chiefs in future seasons? Or that the team will be stuffed with Chiefs' loanees, plus other non-aligned players who are hoping to make a career at Sandy Park?

8. If the above isn't true, why have you failed to offer contracts to players who have given the club one of its most successful seasons in recent memory? They have won 21 out of 29 games, second only to leaders Richmond, who have won 23. Yet, as of Saturday, none of them have had a sniff of a deal from Albion.

9. If the present squad isn't staying, who have you approached to sign for Albion next season?

10. Is there any truth in a rumour you are planning to cut costs, which could have an impact on staffing levels at Brickfields?

Now, I'm not expecting an answer to any of these questions, although I'm informed another media outlet has managed to corral messrs Priday and Venables for an interview later this week some time.

If the two gentlemen concerned would care to expound their views on Albion's future, I'm always on the end of a phone – (see link) – or you can even email me on: (see link)

Must admit I'm not holding my breath, though

If only Argyle had a reporter who was prepared to go to war with Brent in order to get the questions fans want answered without bending the knee and keeping quiet while rome crumbles around them.

If we dont go up this season which is a strong possibility now you can better your mortgage that Errington wont go after Brent like this.

I like Errington as a reporter and co-commentator. But sadly, as his wife is part of the establishment up at Home Park, the chances of him questioning Brent to any meaningful level is pretty remote.
