He would be on around £170,000 a year now if we go on inflation. In 1985, the average wage in London was just over £10,000, Samsom was on £62,000ish a year back then. He wasn't on the lunacy-wages of today where even an average Premier League player earns just over £20,000 a week but he's unlikely to have been poor.
I read the Jock Morrison autobiography and some of the signing on fees were truly mental - he was on a £2-3,000 a week contract but the signing on fees were £20-30,000. Samson was reportedly on £1,200 a week but that would include a load of add ons, sponsorship, free car (Tynan had a Yugo remember), housing via the club, expenses, free meals out from the local restaraunter etc. etc.
It's a sad story but it happens to people every day.
