| The Smith link has been doing the rounds since Christmas.
It's depressing that the best Argyle can come up with is that old chestnut, "we do not comment on speculation".
It's hardly speculation when the player is spotted in Plymouth and confirms it with a photo.
Notts County obviously have no objection to him being here so why the secretiveness?
It's not exactly a Bale seen in Manchester moment.
Why not just say that they are having discussions and we'll let you know more if and when it happens. |

Because in the minds of avivas Alan Smith is seen as up there with Taribo West in terms of international recognition and put the JANNERS.....JANNERS on the map. all bullshit of course and i agree with you. More importantly i wish they either sign him or move on as its dragging now. |

| Lots of interesting stuff on this thread.
I have no kind of direct link to Stonehouse at all. I've never lived there but my parents did, they were married in St Paul's church, my brothers and sister were born in St Paul's Street and my parents lived in a flat in a house that took a direct hit in the blitz and then had to move in with my Mum's sister who lived a few doors away but my folks weren't really Stonehouse types having moved there to be in the city so that travelling to work was less hassle.
Putting all of that to one side I'd just like to pass on my impressions from visits to the Butchers Arms a while back. The first time I went there was after doing some extra work when Hornblower was filmed at RWY before it all got done up. The Butcher's was a small place and apart from us there was nobody in there - mind you it was quite early evening. The next time I had occasion to go there was on a Saturday lunchtime. Still hardly any customers but they were obviously trying for the RWY custom and there was quite a decent looking menu. On that menu was something like a warm Turbot & black pudding salad. I didn't try it but it looked good and came at a hefty price. I asked the barmaid if it got busy in the evenings: "not really - everybody goes in there right past us". "Do any of the inmates ever come out here to eat?" "One or two have but not that many."
It was very sad. The pub had been spruced up, the menu looked enticing, there was a variety of beers on offer but all to no avail. Within a few months the place was shut.
RWY is what it is and it is a very pleasant place to while a few hours away but I don't think it does much for a wider Stonehouse beyond employing a few cleaners and looking good in promotional videoes and photographs.
I suppose some money must trickle out and some local businesses must prosper because everybody needs the various services we all rely upon but in the great scheme of things the money it attracts leaves as quickly as it arrives and if you are HFW or Las Iguanas or Wagammamas or the Seco Lounge then you're doing very nicely but if you are the Artillery, Butcher's Arms, VOT or the Italian bistro whose name I forget it might as well not exist. |

I think Adams has made it totally clear numerous times that he doesn't speculate openly about transfer speculation. Let the guy clearly do what he does best. As I mentioned to some Village Avivas yesterday we are where we are not because of Brent but in spite of him. That is entirely down to Del Bhey. Let him continue the top work unhindered |

If it was open now, with the right people, it'd be a goldmine. Get your beers and menu right, and charge less for it than in the Yard and you're in business. Location is A1. As far as the other pubs go, I disagree that they don't benefit from RWY overspill. Have you been in the VOT lately? Spruced up quite nicely, and we'll quite often go in for drinks before and/or after a visit to the Yard. The Artillery is still very much a down at heel place, but is a fine place for 'late drinks' after the Yard has shut and Belinda(?) has locked the doors. |

| Well known player, but now 35 and playing for clubs in the bottom tier, hard to see why Derek is so keen. But given his recent recruitment success, guess we have to trust his judgement. As always in football we will see. |

I rarely get down to that part of town and when I do it is to RWY it. The last time I was there I ate in the HFW place which was fine but, I thought, expensive for what we got. I haven't been in the VOT since last summer. I've no idea as to the ins and outs of the Butcher's demise but when I was there, which was a few years ago, it looked good in terms of both decor and fare so they seemed to have the right sort of idea going on as to how it was managed beyond that I have no idea. The fact is that it is now shut though. The Rock Salt Cafe isn't far away though and when I last went there it was excellent and busy. Full of RWYers? Maybe. I don't know. And any such discussion has to include The Vine. Now there's a boozer! |

Sounds like a good, concise summary of Cameron/Osborne's economic vision and strategy for the UK |

| My guess is that he's been down to see what we have to offer and have a butchers around and has now returned oop North to mull it over and wait to see what transpires at County regarding their new manager. |

Maybe, but I'm not too sure Adams will be pleased with that scenario. If a Smith-like player is what the squad needs, then Adams will be wanting to sort that out sooner rather than later. We can't be hanging on the whim of someone who see's us as a fall back option. He obviously ain't super keen to join us, or he'd have signed by now. I'm not too sure where I stand on this one at the minute. I'd quite like him here, but I want him to really want to be here. |

Hmmm, this sort of statement always strikes me as a bit silly. If the supporters are the first to know, who the fck is second? |

| Argyle and Adams need to get real.
The player is photographed in Plymouth after rumours had emerged of our attempt to sign him.
It's as if Professor Plum is caught in the ballroom holding the dagger.
What's the problem with saying that we're having preliminary discussions and any further information will be relayed as soon as is practicable.
I hate being treated as a fool.

Perhaps signing him isn't as straight-forward as Smiffy showing up in Plimuff. I assume County will be wanting a fee, which could be dependant on us offloading first. If Del admits interest and then it doesn't happen... Seems he can't win either way with some. |

Do you require updates on other transfer targets of Derek Adams that may have contract offers on the table that they are mulling over? Players less famous than Alan Smith that might not be recognised walking down the street, or in the life centre by your average teenage janner with a smartphone. Alan Smith is just a League Two footballer at a club possibly looking to make a switch. He has an existing contract with a club that may or may not be looking to offload him, that may or may not want a fee, that may or may not match our terms yet. If and when Smith is ready to transfer, and Notts County are happy to let him go (and presumably have a replacement) then all parties can make it happen. The club will be the first to whack out a press release. Until then I don't understand why you'd expect an update from Derek Adams over factors which he has little control and could only lead to disappointment among the fanbase. What is clear from the photos alone is that Adams wants the player and that Alan Smith is giving the idea of coming to Argyle serious consideration. |
