Erm, black artists like Shirley Ellis (she of the fantabulosa Clapping Song) didn't exactly have a lot of say over what they recorded in the 60s ...

But none of this is anything to do with whether a phrase has dodgy origins or not - it's simply to do with who uses the phrase and/or whether it's part of what's perceived as an attack on Brent or the club or pasoti or Newell or Webb or who- or whatever else is currently flavour of the month in those parts. Remember when several of us made disparaging comments about Newell's mate when he was on fifteen to one? Remember how many of us were attacked on twitter for them?

Lets have a look at the etymology of this phrase.......

Most sources state the first usage in the 1950's or 60s (though one person claims a written reference in 1812).

The first slaves arrived in Virginia in 1619.

So, assuming the first written reference was in 1812, I find the slave connection very unlikely.

Why was it not mentioned for the first time until 200 years after the start of the slave trade?

I just re-read the Smalley thread which was the catalyst for my leaving and it really is a shambles. Asked to step forward and apologise to the club for saying whilst I didn't wish an injury like that on anyone, in pure footballing terms this didn't really hurt us.
