I'm an ex-service person and I don't buy or wear a poppy. The reason I don't subscribe to this charity is because I firmly believe that every penny given by the public is disguising the fact that the Government, all of them whatever the colour, should be doing this anyway and not be relying on the public to be their substitute. If you employ people to do a job then you should in all morality look after those people if things go wrong for them. It's called a duty of care. Then again, there are a lot of things collected for that should be provided from central funds in this country. Hospices, Air Ambulance, medical equipment for hospitals to name but a few.

There are always people who feel the need to collect and donate to causes.

The whole point about any appeal, donating or cause is that it is very much an individual thing. I can't understand why somebody would want to donate to a donkey sanctuary when there are starving kids in the world for example but some do. Each to their own and for their own reasons and there frankly isn't a right or a wrong. I don't agree to giving to anything where the vast majority of the money goes in admin charges and only a small amount goes to the actual reason for the donation for example. Plenty of people still do though.

I haven't bought one this year. I usually do. I've got a sibling in the forces (is this the equivalent of having a black friend in an "I'm not racist" debate?) and it isn't really a political statement, I just don't think I've been in a shop since they came out with any change to chuck down.

Serious question though, will we be remembering the 1st World War every year forever? It's 100 years now. To the next generation that's about as relevant as the Napoleanic War. Is anyone who fought even still alive any more?
You have to pick a day to have remembrance day on, the powers that be have chosen armistice day which as I am sure you know celebrates the end of the first world war, I am not aware of more loss of life in a war that we have had and the tag line "lest we forget" would suggest that we need to teach the young about it. The fact it was 100 years ago shouldn't matter, it is a reminder that wars need to be avoided, I would suggest that subsequent leaders have missed that point when laying their wreaths.
Ps. It would be a brave man that changes the day it's held on.
