| My great grandfather fought in the first world war, he was shipped off at the age of 15 or 16 and then fought for several years before losing an arm after being blown up by a shell. When he came home he started to hit the bottle hard and suffered from bad shell shock. (You would call it post traumatic stress disorder now). After the war he wasn't allowed to feature in the victory parade and it hit him real hard. My Grandfather (aged 14) left home one morning (they lived on the Barbican) and got on a ship and worked his passage to Australia because it was so hard living at home with no money and an alcoholic father who used to beat them all. When we contribute to the poppy appeal nowadays we are giving the support to families that my and your great grandparents didn't have, and just think Cobi you would be a front line veteran at your age, had you survived the first push. |

| Really was a different world in those days. My grandfather served in the RN during WW2. Fought in the battle of the River Plate on HMS Exeter and then mainly was on Russian Convoys. I think my grandmother only actually saw him for about a month in total during the whole 6 years of the war. |

| A lot of Merchant Seamen also perished along the way too, we can never be too thankful that we don't have to make a similar sacrifice. _______________________________________ COYG!

| My great uncle died in the collision between The Queen Mary and HMS Curacao. Briefly, the Queen Mary sliced the cruiser in two; one of several escorting 20,000 troops to the UK. The Queen Mary was under orders not to stop for any reason and there were few survivors - Churchill called for a cover up as to not affect morale. The families of this tradegy were never told and information was supressed even after the war. Hard to imagine news being so controlled these days. Google HMS Curacao for a story of different times. |

| I see a player from northern ireland refused to wear a shirt with a poppy on yesterday.
Strange thing to do as it's going to get picked up on and he'll probably get stick from fans over it.
I never knew my fathers father, nor did he really, as he was killed in Sicily when my dad was only 3. That must be such a loss in your life.
Rememberance Sunday isn't the time to air grievances about whether war is right or wrong, but just to remember the masses of men and women who fought for their country and paid the ultimate price. |

The First World War has to be one of the great calamities and tragic wars of the 20th Century and not too long after that other horrid war - the American Civil War.. The build up to the First World War and the actual conflict itself, should fill everyone with sorrow. People were led like sheep in the whole process of that war from its conception right up until its very end. I read a short book many years ago about the national pride that swelled up in the involved nations before and during the war. It is not hard to believe that so many signed up to go and fight. For many [especially in the beginning],they viewed it as an adventure and that they all thought it would all be over in no time and back home to loved ones and friends. 1000s upon 1000s of mostly young Men lost their lives in an attempt to re-shape Europe at the time, led by politicians and royalty alike who should have known better.. Many more came back with tragic cases of illness and disorders that remained with them until they passed away. Harry Patch always said that he would not wish war on anyone, nor should anyone have to witness it for themselves and the horrors he witnessed in his time in the First World War seem so unreal and alien to us all. Sadly,we as a species do not learn and the conflicts that have followed bare witness to that. |

These people don't consider themselves Scottish though. It's not saltires they display it's the tricolour of Ireland. James McClean of Sun derland who refused to wear a poppy because of his republican views has made headlines before when he switched to play for the Republic of Ireland even though he is Northern Irish, and he tweeted some controversial stuff when he got criticised for it. It's not really going to make him many friends playing in England, but I suppose it's his choice. |

| My Father was at Arnhem he went in on one of the gliders with his motorbike as he was a dispatch rider.
A lot of men died in those things. And yes I wear my poppy with pride in memory of all those heroes that have died serving the United kingdom. |

| Not only was the poppy display yesterday a welcome sight but so was the presence of a proper brass band on the pitch to play the Last Post. It was a shame that they didn't play Semper Fidelis as Argyle ran out. |

Not into this fv thing at all but each to their own but what I will say is on this occasion you are very wide of the mark Mr Angry. They tried and were respectful as was all in attendance, you can knock them for a lot of things but not for yesterday. |

There are plenty of criticisms that can be levelled at the Salsa Verde massive, but to criticise the effort they made yesterday with the poppy and the 'Lest We Forget' banner strikes me as petty, vindictive and spiteful. The club did Remembrance weekend proud, and Salsa Verde played it's part. The silence was impeccably observed. |

| From the pictures on GOS it did look half arsed and looked pretty amateurish.
It just looked like a mass of red and white paper, not a poppy.
Atleast they made an effort though and whoever thought it up gets some credit for that. |
