I like having debates but sometimes I feel people (on both sides) distort the opposite side of the debate to an unfair caricature of itself, meaning little meaningful debate actually ends up happening. Surely we can argue with what the other side of the debate is actually saying, rather than a vastly exaggerared and distorted version of it? If you frequent any non-sanitised football site that is raucous or edgy, you'll find that that is a lot of what they're about. It isn't a debating society.
Banter, mid-level insults and condescending put-downs* are the rule rather than the exception. As you grow up, you'll understand*.
*see? Thanks, Czar. In future I shan't believe what you write as it will obviously not be what you mean. |

*see? Ha ha. I suppose so yeah, but is it naive to think that debate can actually take place on realistic grounds? I like things to be edgy and racous as you put it but not at the expense of facts. Otherwise it just turns into a contest of who can shout loudest and who can caricature the opposition point of view the most crudely. Racous or not, it won't help formulate any rational point of view in a million years. I just don't like working on the grounds that people apparently think we're gonna win the league when no-one does whatsoever, maybe that makes me too sanitised! |
