The group you reverentially now call Islamic State, just like they want you to, was originally called Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad when it was formed as an Al Qaeda franchise some time at the end of the last century, they only recently went through the change to ISIL then IS for propaganda purposes and to highlight their split from Al Qaeda.
