This could be Starnes' influence as one of the criticisms of him by Yeovil fans was that no player was ever offered a long deal- I would guess that he would see this tactic as being less risky for the club if things went wrong; although you do run the risk of good players leaving for nothing/ cheap deals. Exactly We will lose more money this way than if we tied a player down Like Reid, Nelson McHugh and Hartely for 2-3 years. We haven't sold a player except Hourihane for years. Hourihane was given a two year contract, had a storming season, then with 12 months remaining chose to leave. We received £180k IIRC. Other new players we have given two year contracts (or more) to include: Jason Banton, Lewis Alessandra, Marvin Morgan, Peter Hartley, Carl McHugh, Dominic Blizzard, Deane Smalley. I'd bet most fans are relieved we aren't battling to hold on to Hartley and McHugh right now, as we are fortunate they were signed on two year deals. However at the halfway point in the Banton, Blizzard, Smalley and Morgan contracts, I am pretty sure the fans and Shez at the time would have gladly let at least 3 of those go, if not 4. Alessandra had a better second season up front than his first as a wide man. Could easily have been let go 12 months ago, and in hindsight I doubt we'd have been battling off the bigger L2 clubs to keep him. On this evidence you have to weigh up the use of 2 year deals. We made £180k on the one hand, but lost a lot of revenue on Morgan, Blizzard, Smalley and Banton who were on senior wages but were used far less than envisaged. I personally think 1 year deals is sensible. Our best players - Hourihane, Reid, Nelson, McCormick - have committed to 2 year deals only after we know they are very decent League Two players who are confident and capable at Argyle. We know they are value for money. We got lucky with Hartley and Mchugh, but signed more players who should have been on 1 year deals that show it doesn't always make sense to give everyone two years. In summary, Wylde, Jervis and Sawyer have a season to prove how good they are - if they are playing great football they'll get an extension offer. If they are crap we can let them go. That's a good position to be in, IMO. |

| As I say, you can always extend a one year deal. If a player if in good form, chances are it is because the player is happy and wants to be there.
It is very hard to undo a two year deal when you have a Blizzard or Morgan in the squad. No other club will match their decent wage, and they are happy to sit out every week of every month they are entitled to.
We will waste as much on the latter players as we make on the good players - it is a scattergun approach and every new player coming in is different. |

| In all fairness, Derek Adams doesn't know these players yet. He is keeping the new signings hungry as he can't be confident these players will dominate the standard - he hasn't managed in it yet.
I imagine once Adams knows his team and knows his players, contract extensions will be offered to who he regards as the key players. |

| I'm certain that if Argyle are challenging at Xmas then longer contracts will be offered. It is a 2 way thing though. Moving down from Scotland is a fair old trip and who knows if the player can settle - if not then after 1 year its bye bye. |

| Don't the Farm Mods swiftly bung any 'rumours' on their 'rumours' board, as a general rule of thumb?
Makes you wonder why that hasn't happened with the Norris thread.
...and FWIW, regardless of 'events', Rickler nailed it. |

| Argyle have been left disappointed by three players who were set to join this week. Richard Chaplow has said he's holding out for a higher division club, Akpa-Apro doesn't want to relocate down south and Linganzi failed a medical

| I was thinking Mariah Carey after that clue. But was holding out for James (Phil) Collins after not knowing any player called Carey!!
Very Sturrocky pre season - I haven't heard of any of these new signings (Sawyer excepted). |

| [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Carey can play on the left or right side of midfield or as a striker. He is very direct at the full backs, a free kick and long throw specialist and his crossing has been described as "unbelievable" While at St Mirren, Carey was used as a left back and as a wing back on the left side. finally a crosser |

| Think he played against us for Huddersfield and he looked a decent player (maybe 6 or 7 years ago). Another winger, this one I think I've seen (could have been a televised match), and he was impressive signed- well done Derek!
Just a decent CM to go. |
