| Nah it's Brent trying to blackmail the council, he's failed and wants to shift the blame for when it doesn't happen again, not my fault, it's Bretonsides fault, it's the fault of PCC..... |

| I agree with Iggy.
Basically there's nothing new here is there? It confirms there's currently no common ground between club and council and that Brent can't get HHP going if the Bretonside cinema goes ahead.
The rest is just rehashed rhetoric. |

The rest is just rehashed rhetoric. I've got to agree with Iggy and SFD, this is just another Herald non story. There is nothing new in this story that hasn't already been said. Except the existing grandstand could continue for the foreseeable future if necessary. Which means there can't be any serious problems with the structure. We all want to see a new stand but while PAFC and PCC work out just how they are going to achieve that in the next few years the grandstand can continue to be used. Now about those replacement / temporary facilities for the supporters? |

At this stage it looks like it will take a few years to get anything going at all, so the Grandstand had better have at least that in it... But now what? The reality seems to me, that Brent needs to change the 'usage' of HHP and get either private investment (unlikely) or the council to pay for it. What can be done that will attract money and fit in with the councils development policy? Not much it seems, otherwise surely they could have come up with an alternative scheme by now? What does Brent do now? I think the press articles highlighting the financial strength of the club and Brent in 'deadlock' with the council, signal the first moves in Brent moving on if he doesn't get his way. |

| By Brent's logic even if Brentonside isn't built so the HHP development can go ahead nothing else could ever be built in Plymouth if it was to upset or take revenue for his Home Park masterpiece. The protectionism by the state that he is asking for is surely counter to his capitalist nature and instincts - in fact he should welcome the competition. |

| Plymouth City Council issued a statement on Wednesday evening which read: “The City Council recognises the economic, community and reputational benefits to the city of having a thriving club in the Football League.
“This is why it has provided extensive support for Plymouth Argyle Football Club over the years, aimed at helping it put itself on a sound financial footing and being in control of its own destiny.
“We support the concept of developing a new grandstand that includes additional facilities to provide an income stream that will help the club to be in a stronger financial position in the future.
“However, any potential support the Council might consider must be good use of public finances, not least due to the serious challenges the Council faces as a result of Government cuts, as well as not exposing the club to financial risk that might threaten its future viability.
“It is not for the Council to dictate to developers what schemes are put forward or not. Our well-established planning policy framework sets out where developments would be acceptable and where they would not.”

| In a nutshell we are in exactly the same place that we have been for years regarding the grandstand and it is something of a quandary.
I can see both sides of it: the council owns Home Park, not Brent, so the council should pay for building on it but why should the council spend significant sums of money on something that enhances the value of a private investment?
It's a conundrum with no easy solution. We all know how difficult it is for the council to commit to such a project given the prevailing economic and political winds so expecting generous assistance from that quarter, even if it was enthusiastic to help, appears to be wishful thinking. At the same time we have an owner either unable or unwilling to fund it himself and going to the market for commercial partners in the project has manifestly failed - and that was even before British Land/Bretonside came along to further muddy the waters.
Where we go from here is anybody's guess but PCC's restraints are unlikely to alter very much in the foreseeable future and Bretonside appears to set on all systems go making a future commercial partnership difficult to imagine.
Whatever action eventually transpires, in whatever shape it takes, is going to have to be initiated by James Brent because nobody else appears to have anywhere to go and if it doesn't then things stay as they are, seemingly, permanently.
From where we are the only way forward looks like being indefinite maintenance of the grandstand with seating being re-installed on the Mayflower Terrace should crowds pick up enough for extra capacity to be needed and bolt-on temperary solutions in the form of portacabins and/or tented structures for the other infra-structure requirements like offices, GT marquee, FPC, club shop etc.

I reckon that even if the Bretonside option didn't go through, for what ever reason - the build at Argyle still wouldn't make the starting blocks!! The pie in the sky mish mash that Brent's people dreamt up was never going to work, in fact I would love to have seen the faces of the finance peeps when those little gems were rolled out, gasps!! 3 years wasted |
