Cant be bothered to read through all 7 pages, but despite torrential rain on NYD the pitched look and played fantastic, a few of us commented on how the pitch looks superb seeing its January. I took a look at the pitch once the game had finished and didnt look like it cut up to much to me. Teams would be crying out for a pitch like this, cant see what all the fuss is about. If the budget has been cut or whatever all the fuss is, it will probably be next season we will actually see the true affects.

As i said yesterday, the pitch looked fantastic. Anyone over forty who has been watching football all of their lives will remember what pitches used to look like at this time of year.
There's no doubt the pitch is an absolute billiard table better than any Wembley surface I've ever seen. There's also no doubt these sort of pitches cost a comparative fortune to water and fertilise in comparison to the old recipe, and that's one reason I am ambivalent to them. Toddy wanted to build a lake on the old zoo to water it, well, that was the peddled excuse. I think there was some sort of issue getting hold of the fertiliser or something at one time but that was during the administration process.
Yes, the old pitches could get too silly, like the old Baseball ground, and I remember the state of the Home Park pitch when we last played Reading. What a quagmire, but we did beat the table topping footballing Reading by 3 or 4. I never thought I would see the day when the American NFL with it's artificial pitch history and obvious business imperatives would end up with more real and exciting diverse pitches than English top notch football. In the end I like to see REAL Northern European football played on a natural pitch of the area that gives a little diversity into the game. Far more ability needed on those old style pitches. Pro football is tippy tappy 5-a-side schoolboy stuff now where huge juggling athletes are more required than properly skilled footballers. Such football doesn't float my boat.

The Doog - there was a character! John Richards - there was a striker! Kenny Hibbit - top midfielder. All it needed was Bully, Mike Bailey, Willie Carr. Good days watching the Wolves (cue "The Liquidator"....)
As much as I enjoy a skilful match, I think some things have been lost when playing on "perfect" pitches. Playing in a bit of mud, water, snow etc brought an unpredictability and variety to a season. To a degree it brought different skills & strengths to the game. I wouldn't want to go back to the bad old days of mud-baths but I do think some things have been lost.

Thanks for that Punchy.
Looking at some of those challenges, it would have ended up a 5 a side game nowadays!

And Billy Rafferty, fine half volley but surprised that it was his first goal of the season, very unusual for him.George Berry had big hair and Ian Atkins took the penalty-i think Dan wanted him as manager instead of Sturrock. He didn't get his way though, makes you wonder if God was an Argyle fan after all.

Anyone see the Luton v Barnet game on BT Sport at lunchtime before the Torquay game?
Absolutely farcical but hilarious at the same time. How it was allowed to carry on was bizarre. Checkout this contender for air shot of the year....
To all the posters who were skeptical about the pitch condition once we got into winter and that not enough money was being spent... believed rumours and not their own eyes ...how d'you like them apples?

I am certainly no groundsman and if I were I find the term derogatory.
