Brentford drew 2-2 with Chelsea and Oldham beating Liverpool 3-1.
It can be done. Why on earth are Argyle so hooked on getting beaten in cup competitions?
Yes punchers we are shite in the FA cup, might make round 2 of the FA trophy, if we avoid the Big guns!
Well then what was I doing at Villa Park watching a semi-final?
Funny enough Pete I had Friday night free as 'er indoors was at a friend's house. Watched the road to Villa Park on You Tube, glorious. I was 13 at the time and it was the first season I was allowed to go to Argyle on my own.
It was a dire season save for the cup run. I remember Barking at home which at the time I thought slightly exotic, NOT erotic!!! Darlo and of course Tynan's turning point the last minute equalizer.
Interesting to note that whilst we were in the third tier of the pyramid attendances were at the 3-4k mark. This year our attendances have been remarkable given the dross on offer. Janners often get a bad name but they don't deserve it this time.
Happy days.

35000 at HP for the home Derby match,24000 at Villa Park, big away followings at Derby and WBA,happy days.In relation to the crowds in the league,i think that it was a very bad time for gates generally [they were even worse at HP a couple of years before]-hooliganism and some other factors led to a downward trend from the mid 1970's onwards which only bottomed out in the early 1990's.The Derby match demonstrated what could have been achieved in that era if a sniff of genuine success was offered-Derby is often quoted as a "football town" in comparison to Plymouth, they only attracted 27000 for the replay though and i'd have thought that at least 3000 of those were Argyle fans.
Funnily enough,Argyle's record in the FA cup since and including 1984 is acually better than in all the years before.Quarter final under Holloway [which is often forgotten when his record at the club is discussed],5th round when Smith was manager, best previous was the 5th round in 1953,when we lost to frigging Gateshead. Not brilliant overall and utter shite in recent times,i'll never forget that run in '84 though.

27000 was pretty much a capacity crowd at the Baseball Ground so they couldn't get many more than that.
What a night!
If you were there that night you'll understand that piece I linked to on the last page. If you weren't it goes some way to explaining.

Went through the same emotions as that guy in 1973/74 as well, when we reached the league cup semi final.Beating three first division teams on their own ground just didn't happen at Argyle [or at many other clubs for that matter],i suppose the only difference was that Bradford City actually reached the final whereas we lost to Man City.It was a wonderful, almost surreal time to be an Argyle fan though, indeed the Waiters years in their entireity were like that until he was sold down the river.
I was indeed at the Baseball Ground that night and had a birds eye view of Cherry missing Andy Roger's corner.Although Derby never looked like scoring and Argyle should have had the match sewn up a long time before, the last 10 minutes were awful-i was bricking it that they would equalise, maybe an example of the disbelief and fatalism that the Bradford fan was talking about. There was a Wolves supporter stood beside me [no idea of how he managed to get in the Argyle end] and when i was cursing and fretting in the last 10 minutes,he said "don't worry mate, they'll never score as long as they've got holes in their arses!" He was right but he had the massive advantage of being able to look at the situation objectively.
BTW,the ground wasn't full-the capacity was 33000 at the time,i remember there being quite a bit of room in the terraces at the sides of the ground, they certainly were nowhere near as packed as our end, which in turn was not as packed as at the Hawthorns.

If Highbury had fences, and we werent able to get over the hoardings at the front to relieve the crush, there would have been a serious situation for the 6-1 game. It wasn't until people were screaming at the stewards that they realised they had to open up a sectioned off area under the Clock. 39,000 attendance with 12-14,000 Argyle fans there. We got stuffed, but some great memories of that day...

Take away the 1970,s and 80,s what have we ever done in the cup..apart from the Holloway spat getting us into the quarters..nothing much considering we were a championship side at the time , anyone below 30 can never remember anything good about Argyle in the cup apart from we are probably the worst side in England when it comes to cup competitions

I remember Bristol City away in the cup in the 80's as well. There's some footage somewhere. Younger readers will be astonished that it was not all ticket. Queued for an hour to get in and a guy was stabbed in the queue. Never have I felt more scared. Much of the footballing publics sympathy at the time of Hillsborough was that we all knew it could have been us.
When we scored (Summerield?) the place went mental. I ended up about 30 feet from where I was stood due to the surge. Took me ages to get back to my mates. FOUND IT!!! The goal is 35 seconds in and you can see how packed the Argyle terrace is in the top right hand corner.
Arsenal away was nuts as well. The North Circular was a sea of Argyle coaches and cars. Remember being stuck somewhere and 3 or 4 cars opened their sun roofs and Argyle fans climbed on top of the cars singing and waving scarves.
Didn't we do a pitch invasion when we scored even though it meant we were losing 5-1 at the time. Happy days.

Went to Highbury on the Argyle special train, fantastic scenes at the station afterwards. Ditto the Wembley playoff.

I was at both of those Bristol City matches. Now those were proper Derby atmospheres. Nearly got crushed by the police horses on the exit to the away end, and it was going off all over the place in the park behind.
I thought we were 3-0 down at h/t at Highbury, then came out and scored the best goal of the match to make it 3-1 (Rowbotham?)

I know his second spell turned sour, but I'd fookin walk to Southend and carry Sturrock back to the Muff if there was ever a chance. League1/2 is where he excels.
I'd draw the line at him signing Blair (again) tho...
