Radio broadcast genius isn't he? Listened on the Iplayer to his Saturday morning show and he's quite brilliant. Don't like him so much on TV but he seems made for radio. His 606 hasn't ever been the same since he left all those years ago.

Take's you a while then.
I like the chap, but feel his take was of it's time when it was fashionable for a bit of a think and chirp in football ... sort of post the Arsenal fan book when it was ok to talk of your feel for the game and part of it's culture.... sort of a blue or white collar working class confessions thing with the education to put it down on paper.
I listen to a lot of radio ( not R5L), far more than I do TV. I did like Fighting Talk however, with Johnny whathisname, but that fell off the end of a cliff when he left.
Still, at least it isn't Frank Skinner.
Football needs a breath of fresh air. Wonder what it will be.

I'd suggest you give Danny Baker another listen, Penz. It's hardly even a sports show nowadays, let alone a football show.

I might do that Peggy. I'm always looking for something that isn't basted with celebrity and rolling news. As i said, I always liked the chap. I particularly like some of the mixed podcasts you can now download. 5 minutes of a Woman's hour is plenty flower

PP, I would echo Peggy's suggestion - funnily enough I never liked DB when he was fashionable, but now find his scatter gun of a show more than a little entertaining.

As Peggy touches upon, football is more a 'guiding principle' than it is the focus of the show; every one of which makes me laugh out loud at least once.

Definately worth another listen.

I've taken to listening to Desert Island Discs podcasts whilst boringly pounding the streets in an attempt to make pension age.

DB's was, as most are, an interesting insight and he does seem to be a "what you see, is what you get" type. Definitely a life's for living sort.

I'm the sort of sad git who has done the same (without the pounding the streets bit).

I listened to Danny Baker's programme also. I couldn't make up my mind if he was an irritating prat or a life-affirming inspiration. I used to like his call-in footie programme after the results on a Saturday. And then the programme was given to Tory Boy (erased his name from my memory....). Come back Danny.

I agree with those who recommend his Saturday morning show. Danny Baker is as close to a genius as there is presenting anything on radio today. His background is quite interesting. I think he started the Sniffin' Glue fanzine in the '70s and cobbled it together on his school's photocopier. He moved on from there and was one of a fantastic clutch of writers working for the NME. Others included Nick Kent, Charles Shaar Murray, Ian Penman, Danny Kelly, Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill who have all moved on with varying degrees of success. He's living proof that you don't need to be an educated wanker to offer insight.

I must admit I haven't listened to Danny Baker's show because I always thought he was a complete wankstain, second only to Chris Evans on whatever that show they did together was called.

After all these recommendations I'll have to give him a try again and if he's still a wankstain I'll be blaming you lot.

It depends on high high your chirpy cockney banter threshold is. If you hated him before then you'll probably still hate him now.

I disagree with you about Danny Baker, but hats off for use of the word wankstain. I really don't think we hear that word often enough, here or elsewhere.

For what it's worth, I like this phrase; I believe you practice 50% of the mechanics of procreation.
