Cricket season has definitely arrived then Nick |

| Fab game. They scored 229-2 off their 40, we nicked the win with an over and one wicket to spare. Sadly I nicked it nibbling for a wide one and was caught behind for a paulty 5 runs. |

| Very interesting to see the latest member to join is called Chris Uren. There was a very good cricketer called Chris Uren who played for Plymouth, probably in the 1970's and 1980's,wonder if he's one and the same? |

- So the ginger from Yorkshire gets the nod in the absence of Bopara. Saw him biff the Injuns about at Cardiff ast year when it looked like we were struggling. Not sure I'd want him facing the Saffers later on in the summer, though. Not sure I'd want many of our batsmen doing that, mind.
Then it's a shout between Finn, Onions and Bresnan for the last spot.
I'd plump for Onions. I really liked him pre-injuries and he's on fire this summer too. Can't really go wrong with any of the three though! I'd say Onions won the battle of the 3rd seamers Mock. Always looked more threatening than Finn anyway. Bopara has scored a one-day and a County Championship century this week, so if Bairstow fails again tomorrow, 17 no at the moment, Bopara should be back in the frame for a recall against the South Africans. Anyone still interested in a cricket freak meet? |

| Bairstow just bowled for 18. Time to give someone else a go I reckon. |

Wasn't it Marvan Atapattu who suffered 5 successive ducks in his first five test innings, yet went on to score over 5,000 test runs at an average of just under 40 ? The coaches and selectors for England these days, quite rightly seem to back their judgement on young players, instead of the old days when batsmen came and went with monotonous regularity. |

| I suppose it is good to give him time to get used to International cricket, but there are others raring to go if he isn't up to it. He's played a few one-day and 20/20 games already so the selectors and Flower should know if he's going to be able to make the grade.
I would just like to see Compton given his chance, although ideally he would bat higher up the order, and Bopara is now in good form and he's already played test cricket.
It's nice to have options, like with the 3rd bowler behind Anderson and Broad. There's Onions, Finn and Bresnan all capable of taking wickets, even though yesterday showed that all 3 of them are still a way behind the 2 who were rested. |

Didn't he spend several seasons at Middx without achieving much of note ? |

| Promising young Surrey cricketer Tom Maynard 23, found dead early this morning after being hit by an underground train. No suspicious circumstances so an apparent suicide. His father was Matthew Maynard who played for England before being part of the coaching set-up. Tom scored over first class 1,000 runs for Surrey last season, and was on course for another good season this year, where he was averaging nearly 50. I saw him play for Glamorgan a few years ago, and he was a real big hitting batsman, exciting to watch, and the locals were all sure he would go on to emulate his father and play for England. He was still young enough to have done so at 23. Great shame so young. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] |

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] He was on Cricket AM on Saturday. Reports say he'd abandoned a car at about 4 am after driving erratically and had been chased by police. Tragic. |

| Just for the short-sighted goat on here!
So Nick Compton should be getting a go in the test team and I think England could do a lot worse than give Peter Trego a go in the 20/20 team.
Absolutely destroys attacks on a going day and takes his fair share of wickets too. |

And my Mrs has a bit of a thing for him. Which suits me as it means whenever Somerset are on the box, she's more than happy to let me watch the game |

| Compton would give me more confidence than the young lads. Wouldn't be surprised for 5 bowlers tomorrow, although that puts heaps of pressure on whoever bats at 5.
Trego smashed Morkel about in the warm-up at Taunton, he hit six 4s in an over from him. Not sure how comfy he'd be away from Taunton mind. |

He blitzed Hampshire at the Rose Bowl last night, scored 50 off 23 balls to give Somerset a brilliant start, then took a couple of wickets. I had a nice little bet on Somerset scoring more than Hampshire in the first 15 overs so it was great watching him smash it all over the place. He ended up with 61 from 31 balls. |

That seems to be a peculiarly 'Somerset' thing - over the years they've had a lot of players who were terrific at Taunton, and whilst playing for Somerset, but couldn't, or wouldn't, reproduce that form on a national stage. Going back in time, the likes of Denning, Dredge and Popplewell all had it in them to play at a higher level; the late and much-missed Peter Roebuck should undoubtedly have played for England, and even in more recent times Mark Lathwell, who has to rank as one of the most talented batsmen I've ever seen, clammed up and just didn't perform when selected for England, but played like Bradman at times for the cider county. |
