Playmaker Graham Carey is to leave Plymouth Argyle after four seasons at Home Park.

The League Two club confirmed Carey’s decision on Tuesday lunchtime, shortly after new Pilgrims’ boss Ryan Lowe had carried out his introductory Press conference.

Carey had been offered a new contract to extend his stay with Argyle but will be moving on to a ‘new challenge’.

Lowe had earlier told the media that he wanted answers from Carey and Ruben Lameiras in the next 24 to 48 hours about whether they were ready to stay at Home Park.

The Argyle manager revealed he had already had conversations with the out-of-contract pair, who have both been offered new deals by the League Two club.

The talented duo have both been linked with a number of clubs this close season, with Charlton Athletic believed to be very interested in Lameiras.

Lowe told Plymouth Live: “I’m in discussions with them. They have been brilliant with me on the phone.

“I have spoken to Graham and Ruben. Two fantastic lads. I have asked for the opportunity to work with them.

“I have said to them ‘If you want to work with us and we can make you better then brilliant.’

“If they don’t and they want to move on somewhere else that’s fine. They are both out of contract and are at that age where they can walk away for free

What do you do? You can’t cry over spilt milk. It’s just one of those situations that they find themselves in.

“Yes, we would love them to stay but if they move on, fine, no problem, we will replace them.”

Carey was Argyle’s Player of the Year in 2017/18 and Lameiras picked up the award last term.

Yet, despite the undoubted ability of both of them, they were both part of the Pilgrims’ squad which was relegated from League One.

Lowe said: “I would like them to give me, the football club and the Green Army an opportunity to make it right.

“If it’s a ‘no’ then fine, we will wish them all the best and they can move on.

“If it’s a ‘yes’ then great. We will work with them and we will make them better, and they will certainly make us better.”

Lowe did not have gut feeling on what the answers of Carey and Lameiras would be.


He said: “I don’t really know them as such. I have only spoken to them on the phone.

“It’s a yes or a no basically. If it’s a yes, great, if it’s a no we will move on.”

If Lameiras goes aswell Lowe has some serious ‘playmaker shopping’ to go and do.

Wonder how many wives and girlfriends he had in that time

Nearer to family?

Big Shame but him staying was never going to happen sadly certainly not after relegation. All the best to him with this move i hope it works out for him. He has been one of our best players and wont be easy to replace we may never see his like again at home park.....

Get a grip Angers.

Some times it takes a while for players to find a good fit, as far as a club goes. GC had a fairly unremarkable career before Adams brought him here. Then he just clicked. Similar happened with Ladapo. Last year was light years ahead of his next best season anywhere else.

By and large Carey has been a fantastic player for us, and has provided some proper euphoric moments in the last four years. He’ll be missed, foreshore.

Let’s hope the wages freed up by his departure is well spent by Lowe.

Expectations are low for some!
A good move for GC and Argo time for a change all round.

Pity he’s gone but that’s it, perhaps a clean slate of players who have the stench of relegation about them maybe a good thing, we shall see.

He was one of our better players no doubt. Time to move on. I wish him all the best.

With Carey gone and Freddie and Ruben soon to follow what remains is pretty much non-league standard.  If the hallett wallett doesn't open we could be in for quite a grim season.

He's just opened his wallet to free us permanently from the Brents. He's just paid off Adams and Wottons contracts, plus £150k compensation to Bury out of his own pocket.

Joking aside, it really must be a manically depressing world you live in if you can't even crack a half-smile with that type of stuff happening at our club.
