Plymouth Argyle are having a very good season, sitting comfortably in promotion position 3 points clear of the chasing pack which is a big improvement from their previous campaigns. One of the big contributors to the team’s standout success this season is the 26-year-old Irish play-maker Graham Carey.
Carey played for a variety of top-tier Scottish teams including Celtic and St Mirren before testing his talent in England with Plymouth. He also represented the Republic of Ireland at all youth levels. Playing at the number-10 position, Carey stood out for his ability to strike a football as well as his ability to pick out the ball over the top into his running attackers.
The talented midfielder has already scored 9 goals this season despite missing more than 2 months of action due to a knee injury in November. Carey has shown his goal-scoring instinct and his ability to be in the right place at the right time when opportunity arises. To go along with his impressive positional play, he has showed he has the ability to score screamers from outside the box. Most noticeable of them all was a left-footed strike, against Millwall back in November, driving the ball straight to the top corner from more than 30 yards out. Carey’s ability to hit the ball with precision and power forces defenders to close him down quickly which opens up passing lanes for him to set up his teammate with his equally skilled passing.
Besides his finishing ability, Carey has a very deft left foot with keen eyes for through-balls down the middle. He provides Plymouth another option other than the wide plays usually seen in League 2. He likes to be on the ball with the majority of Plymouth’s attacks going through his feet. Also blessed with set piece ability, Carey has 6 assists to go with his 9 goals making him a top attacking contributor for Plymouth.
A weakness in Carey’s game is his lack of physicality. Carey is not the fastest nor the strongest player on the pitch and tend to lose out on 50/50 physical confrontations. To make up for this, he has a very high work rate looking to tackle high up the field to put his team on the front foot. Plymouth have benefited from this on a few occasions where Carey has won the ball in the opponent’s half giving him or a team mate a clear run at goal.
Carey was linked with Wolves in the Championship earlier this season, before his injury stopped any potential move. With the transfer window now shut he can focus entirely on performing for the rest of the season to win promotion. The Pilgrims’ fans will be hoping that Carey keeps on performing to fire them to League One.
