I’ve just recently stumbled across Rory Gallagher having watched the Irish tour 1974, playing Belfast which took some balls. What a musician, Clapton was a fine musician but sorry this guy puts him in the shade. Appaza the stones wanted him to replace Mick Taylor, how good would that have been.
The guitarist’s guitarist. He performed with Taste at the Van Dyke club in exmouth road. About 1970 ish. Unfortunately I missed it but saw him twice, once again at the Van Dyke and later (1974?) in the Guildhall. Both times as the Rory Gallagher Band. I couldn’t imagine there being a more spellbinding complete blues rock performer than him. Absolutely brilliant.
I saw him with Taste at the van Dyke 1970/72 ?. bought on the boards. Raw punchy bluesy RnB type sound, a change from normal recordings.. great stuff at the time, rasping guitar Little white pumps, big head of hair, ran over time, just one more he kept asking Greg's dad ? LOL A real favourite night Have some of my brothers' photos of that gig somewhere.

looks like it wasn't Taste in 71 after all, checking the listings. Still, his new band did all the taste stuff, as it was the same Rory show Probably had just formed after the split. Long time ago..Osibisa were stunning too on this particular flyer
As I said, I missed the Taste gig. I think on that night I was posting flyers on behalf of Ted Heath. Something about how we were only joining a common market.

Clapton was once asked what it felt like to be regarded as the best rock guitarist in the world. His response, 'I don't know. Why don't you ask Rory Gallagher'.

Not the best number in the world that, different guitar ?. Felt like watching our generation's version of a Palm court trio. So, so long ago in a different galaxy as POI would say. Talking of which, I see the next star wars is going to use dead actors...a bit like finding the dead sea scrolls. I'm just a recording here myself, having died donkeys ears ago, after the start of the run by bankers for bankers epoque.

The action on the telecaster is higher and the neck is wider than the strat so better for slide. I’d imagine that after Jimi dying and Clapton deciding the limelight wasn’t for him, there was a vacant for a hard rock trio.

There was a televised Rory Gallagher concert on BCC2 that caused quite a stir when I was at school.
I don't recall the details. Might have been from Rock Goes To College, the Rockpalast or Montreux Jazz and Blues Fest all of which were televised at about the same time which I'm guessing would have been early 80s/late 70s.
No matter where it came from or when the gig was a belter.
It's probably on YouTube somewhere

I think it was this one: https://vimeo.com/135786064
Montreux '79.
There's more than one Montreux performance if you care to look but I think it was this one.
