- Wright-Phillips and Noone leaving in January didn't help...
I was going to say that myself, was that all that left then? We also had injuries and lots of suspensions racked up post Christmas together with a feeling that the club had lost its way again. I made a similar post last night on another thread comparing this squad to the squad two years ago that beat Exeter easily in both league and tin pot only to fail at Wembly I think the squad then was better than it is now especially at the back. I can’t remember who else left but they were hammer blows. Remember seeing Wright-Phillips and Mason play together in the first 3-2 away comeback game at Bristol Rovers and thinking that we had a good chance with those types of forwards. BWP promptly left for Charlton where he continued to score goals.

| I think BWP had scored something like 13 goals by Christmas before he left...saw him a few time down the Valley in the new year and he roughly did the same again, something like thirteen goals for them....so easy and casual and on the spot....bang, the ball was in the net.
Didn't Reading have a look at him and said no because of his dodgy knee, who cares if he had a dodgy knee and didn't train much, it's the end product that you judge, not his fitness levels.
Still reckon he was better than his overrated big brother. |

Not to start with, that came later along with loss of people like Wright Phillips, Noone, Johnson, Stevens and Seip. Argyle had a disastrous spell after the deduction and losing those players, which was understandable, but picked up some form towards the end of the season-too late unfortunately. The play offs were not a million miles away before those players left and the squad was certainly better than the one currently in place, would have been even better if Barnes had not been sold off. Utter nonsense not take into account the effect that circumstances had on matters-the retention of Wright Phillips alone would have ensured that a far greater total of 52 points would have been attained. D&R ended up 4th from bottom on 47 points. We were 5 points behind them and would have needed an extra 2 points to go above Walsall who would have had to take our place. So we would have needed 49 points (59 before the 10 point deduction). |
