Striker David Goodwillie was one of nine professionals in Argyle's starting line-up against Helston in the South West Peninsula League on Tuesday

DAVID GOODWILLIE scored two of the goals as a strong Plymouth Argyle side won 5-1 away to Helston Athletic on Tuesday.

Jimmy Spencer, Ryan Donaldson and substitute Ben Steer were also on target for the Pilgrims in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division game.

Manager Derek Adams made the trip to west Cornwall as Argyle named nine professionals in their starting line-up.

They included all seven of the substitutes from the 2-0 Devon derby win at Exeter City on Saturday, with Goodwillie and Spencer among them.

Spencer opened the scoring for Argyle early on, only for Mattie Buchan to equalise in the 25th minute.

Goodwillie then restored the visitors' lead in first half stoppage time with a penalty.

It was 3-1 to Argyle in the 52nd minute with a close range header from Goodwillie before Donaldson and Steer netted in the closing stages.

Steer is one of Argyle's three 'professional development' players, along with Billy Palfrey and Jack Calver, who both started against Helston.

Argyle are using their fixtures in the SWPL this season to ensure all of their first team squad get regular action.

Adams said: "It's for the development of the younger players, and also an opportunity for our professional players to get some game-time if they are not playing on a Saturday.

"We have got a good squad and over the course of the season there will be players coming in and out, and coming back from injury.

"I think it is good for the Peninsula League that they have got a (professional) team that is willing to put their players out there."

The Pilgrims have won eight and drawn two of their 11 Premier Division games in the SWPL this season.

Argyle: Vincent Dorel, Oscar Threlkeld, Jack Calver, David Ijaha, Billy Palfrey, Karleigh Osborne, Jake Jervis, Connor Smith, Jimmy Spencer, David Goodwillie, Ryan Donaldson.

Substitutes: Jordan Bentley, Callum Rose, Ben Steer, Alex Fletcher, Marc McCallum.

I saw the title and thought I'd been in a time warp and it was the FA Cup 1st round.

I was going to say the new loan rules but I seem to remember reading that GK fall outside of that rule. Not sure I agree with that though - one in all in! Mind you that chap Pompey got last season for play-offs wasn't too sharp but then nor were we in the following big game.

Yes because for those involved in Local football, Argyles involvement makes a mockery of the competition. its controversial because many people involved in local football clubs are volunteers, being involved at this level is like having a second job.

Then you get idiots like Adams talking out of his ass trying to tell us that argyles involvement is good for local football.

Never has been and never will be, which is why i hope we turn you over tomorrow.

If you're a floating Saltash supporter (bizarre as that sounds), you're more likely to wanna see your team perform against a load of Pro's, than against some other pissy-arsed Cornish village team.

Argyle fielding a load of pro players will mean a bigger gate for Mickey Mouse sides like Saltash, without doubt.

If you can come up with another competition which would allow the balance of Argyles squad to stay match sharp then it would be good to hear it

Its not up to the local football scene to support Plymouth Argyle by letting them feck up the local leagues. What have Argyle ever done for local football anyway?

we have been here before, they will cock around in the SWPl for a few years then leave, and come back down the line again.

People would rather see a balanced competition i think you will find,

Pre-season friendlies are an opportunity to play against pro clubs, not mid season when there are very important points up for grabs,

Come you Ashes !

I'm not entirely unsympathetic, but the local leagues have been fecked up more by the expansion of the southern league. 30 odd years ago you had a strong western league, where Falmouth, Liskeard and Saltash all had strong teams. Most of the bigger local semi-pro sides Truro, Taunton, Bideford and Tiverton have all progressed whilst others have stood still.

The South West Peninsula league is a great league, some really good non-league grounds and good clubs with a lot of history, formed by joining the old Jewson south western league and Devon league together. Its taken a number of years to settle but it really is a good league now. One which is incredibly tough win.
