| Deal Imminent: Chelsea set to confirm midfielder Houghton move to Plymouth Chelsea midfielder Jordan Houghton is poised to join League Two promotion-hopefuls Plymouth Argyle, sources have told TEAMtalk.com. As revealed by TEAMtalk.com earlier this week a number of Football League clubs were chasing the highly-rated midfielder, but Plymouth have won the race for his signature. Houghton, 20, enjoyed a spell out on loan at Gillingham earlier this season, making 15 appearances for the club before returning to Stamford Bridge in January. Chelsea feel the England Under-20 international would benefit from going out on loan again to get some valuable first-team experience under his belt. Plymouth boss Derek Adams is thought to be an admirer of Houghton and sees him as a key addition to his squad for the run-in to the season. Plymouth are currently third in League Two and are well-placed to secure automatic promotion and Houghton’s arrival will come as a welcome boost to the squad. | Pleased on the surface with this one - at least shows some intent to get some additional quality in.
If the report that McHugh, Hartley and Threlkeld all in contention for Saturday is accurate, we are looking in better shape already. |

| Somebody reported on the Herald website that he is a similar player to Conor Clifford- a box to box midfielder with lots of energy. Has also played 18 times for Gillingham, this season, who were near top of League 1 at the time. Looks a good signing. |

| He's on Chelsea's books so he's obviously talented, better this type of loan than some Donkey out of Scunthorpe /Bury reserves. |

| The Pilgrims' boss said it is a possibility that he could complete another loan signing before the game against Accrington.
Adams would not give away any more clues than that, but it would not be a surprise were he to bring in a defender

| Sounds like a good signing, and does it indicate Adams has finally given up on Boateng ? I hope so. No point hanging around for something that isn't going to happen as points continue to slip away. I thought I read somewhere, possibly Starnes, that Adams was looking for experience, not youth. This doesn't fit with that. I guess he'll go straight in on Saturday. |

| Same initial thoughts as Lord Biro (that'll smart ) Starnes said we were looking for experience. Odd. The proof is in the pudding but good luck to the lad. |

| Also, if he stays true to form DA won't play him for a few games anyway. He seems to like letting new signings settle in for a bit first. Given McHugh and Oscar are allegedly 'in contention' for Saturday they could easily be squarely back as first team regulars by the time DA is ready to play Houghton. |

| You have to wonder what our 1st choice XI now is. I do anyway. I honestly haven't a clue.
Earlier in the season it was nailed on: McCormick, Mellor, Nelson, Hartley, Sawyer at the back with McH and Boat in front of them, Roobs up top, Carey in behind with Jervis out wide one side and Wylde on t'other.
Of that lot we are currently without Hartley, McH and Boat and Jervis has gone off the boil.
What we do seem to have done is achieve a settled shape based on the above.
If McH is fit does he come back in midfield or at CB? That's the first question to be settled. If he goes into midfield we have to trust Purrington at LB and move Sawyer central. I don't think any of that is likely. If McH comes back he'll go to CB to minimise the disruption to the back 4.
That leaves the two sitters. Step forward Oscar and Simpson, presumably, but neither of them have huge physical presence in comparison to McH and Boat.
We still have Roobs and Carey in their preferred roles so presumably Tanner and Wylde go wide.
And Simpson hasn't really been that impressive. Oscar offers huge energy and seems to get stronger the longer the game goes on whereas Simpson is all about slotting in, moving the ball on, covering gaps and playing shape which is fine but he rarely seems to actually win the ball either on the deck or in the air.
And then there's Nardiello. He hasn't contributed anything at all yet so why did we bring him in? If he's going to play we need to go 4-4-2 so that's him and Roobs up top, Wylde wide, Carey and Oscar central with some sort of back four (see earlier in this post for those options).
I would imagine the new lad, Carey and Oscar will form the basis of a midfield possibly with Tanner and Wylde wide and Roobs on his tod up top.
Jervis and Nardiello benched to provide options as the game unfolds? The other subs would have to Simpson, Purrington, Bittner, Rooney and Harvey because I can't think of anybody else that might be available. |
