... where the goal should not have stood due to Messi being off-side.
But little recognition of Mike Trebilcock's effort back in 1964 which was very similar.
...which was not off-side!

Great clip,Trebilcock was my childhood argyle hero. He was a better player then than Messi is now surely. Really don't see what all the fuss is about, it's the kind of thing the fans pay their money for.
Not sure if I'm missing something but they both come from behind the ball so cannot be offside.
Before the recent offside rule change Messi would have been offside as he is marginally in front of the ball when Suarez shoots.
The offside rule either needs simplifying or TV technology introduced.

Messi ran forward about 10 yards, for some unfathomable reason, and was in front of Suarez standing smack ban centre of goal when Suarez scored without a defender being near to playing him onside and was clearly in the goalkeeper's vision. If he legitimately wasn't offside then the offside law is a complete and utter ass.
Aren't you being a touch pedantic with this. How the hell is Messi in the keeper's eyeline. If the keeper had saved Suarez's attempt and Messi had scored from the rebound then sure he's offside.
The Newman one is odd in that he passed to Trebilco' on the wrong side seeing has he had to come from the other side of the 'D'. He only just got there before the keeper.
Also strange is the award of the penalty. Can't see much wrong with the challenge especially in those days.
I read a while back that the offside rule used to be three players between you and the goal. When they changed it to two there was an 25% upsurge in goals scored as defenders were confused. This led, a couple of years later, to Dixie Dean scoring 60 goals in one season.
another journalism student with nothing better to do the nick stories of the internet. to save you the trouble its pretty much a copy of what this thread mentions already.
