| PLANS for Plymouth's Bonfire Night celebrations are in full swing. On Thuursday, November 5, the city's main display will take place on Plymouth Hoe. The evening celebrations will begin at 4pm when fairground rides and catering stands open. Heart FM presenters Matt and Caroline will be hosting an evening of performances on the stage from 5.45pm on the stage which will be located on the grassed area near the Royal Citadel. Local artists and dancers will keep everyone entertained; On stage at 6pm are Street Factory followed by Stage Stars at 6.30pm and The Vibes at 7pm. Close to Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse, timber provided by Babcock will create the bonfire which will brighten the dark skies and provide warmth for the evening. The bonfire will be lit at 7.30pm. Creating a cosy atmosphere, visitors can gather around the fire with hot chocolate, tea, coffee and hot food from the nearby catering stands. A firework display will also take place with Pyrovision setting off an assortment of rockets, fountains and firecrackers from the Royal Citadel at 8pm. Performances on the stage will stop at 8pm whilst the fireworks are shown and resume at 8.20pm with the Sugar Thieves continuing the celebrations until 9pm |

| To answer your question Tg, yes, why not. The Council are charged with running the city, and on occasion putting on a show for residents. It's all a bit of redistribution. They no doubt pay to hold the firework thing in the Summer. I remember the Council saying they themselves would probably make a loss at being a World Cup host city, and only a select few private companies would actually make any money over and above normal activity. The council might just break even with receiving trading concessions etc. Not my scene though. Far too many burgers and kids stuff. But I guess that's who it's aimed at, hard working families . The Hoe is a cracking venue though. Not many better. The city does have to try something. Jones' PR Ocean City nonsense ain't going to bring in a shoal of mackerel. Is Birdman still going to do the shoppers Winter lights thing ? |

| It was good when the fireworks are choreographed to music, Dartmouth has a brilliant display in the summer with music. |

| Why not?
The council has many duties one of which is to promote the city to a wider audience. The Firework Competetition does exactly that very successfully and provides stunning pictures for use in PR campaigns.
On top of that the people of Plymouth get a freebie that attracts them in their 10s of 1000s every time.
It's win win win wherever you look.
I think the real question here is why they don't do far more things like this rather than whether they should continue one of the few things they do give to us. |

| One of the friendliest events of the year, offends nobody, or very few.
I'd sooner the money was spent on this than the many 'groups' who receive unwarranted funding. |
