Let's be honest. English people just don't do sport as much as they used to. Just check out the number of local council football/rugby/hockey/tennis etc etc pitches compared to the past. I see they're building on the old West Hoe courts I used to use.
Just pop down to the local park and see who, if anyone is doing anything energetic. Hong King communities doing their morning tai chi, foreign students playing basketball in their own time, pit bulls running ragged, that's about it.
The English are into eating crisps and fingering their samsung. Even the much heralded "legacy" nonsense spouted by Coe around the Olympic bid has turned out to be quite the opposite. Talking of which, the IAAF thing couldn't have happened to a more pompous person. Beautiful runner, awful politician. His idol and mentor is a corrupt cheat, and probable criminal.
Maybe burger flipping could be considered an Ingerland sport. You don't even have to buy your own team strip.
And Les, I think that might have been Dennis Compton. Great bat, enjoyable commentator.
Oh, and yes, Chick was a fine wide midfield, hard to pin down, and very fit even in his later days. I played with Dave Pook too, ended up pro in France. Great ballplayer, and a bit of a joker.
