| because there's no ice. HE Plymouth Pavilions Ice Rink has been forced to close after a suspected electrical fault melted the ice. Staff could be seen sweeping shards of ice out of the building's rear entrance this evening. It is rumoured an electrical fault has caused the ice to melt, meaning the rink will have to be filled up and frozen again. Due to circumstances beyond our control the Ice Rink will be closed this weekend. Really sorry for any inconvenience Nobody was available to comment when contacted by The Herald at 7pm this evening (September 18). The ice rink is set to be closed all weekend after the unforeseen disaster. On Friday nights the Pavilions Ice Rink is usually taken over by an 'Ice Disco', with disco lights, lasers and the latest chart tunes. It is unclear when the ice rink may reopen, but the centre is advising people to regularly check their social media sites for updates |

| Dear Tudor, If you don't give me extra money and permissions, I will mothball the ice rink. Yours Jim the Shred
It may be the start of Oldway manor, all over again. Not the most reliable of people to do business with, to say the least.
Maybe he's thought the seasonal city centre ice rink will be going up shortly for the Winter months and smells a wheeze to make a few Bob. |

| Mystery over why Plymouth Pavilions ice rink remains closed
THE ice rink at Plymouth Pavilions is still closed - but it is unclear why?
The facility has been out of action since Friday evening, when staff were seen sweeping shards of ice out of the building's rear entrance.
Today The Herald asked a spokeswoman why the rink was closed, but she declined to comment.
The latest update on the Pavilions Twitter page says: "Sorry folks. the Ice Rink is still closed. We'll be back with you as soon as we can. Thanks for your patience |

| Still not open as of now. A long time ago, Tudor Evans said this, and I paraphrase:- 'In this time of crash and recession, we are very lucky to have someone of the stature of James Brent determined to invest in Plymouth.' I bet he wishes he had never set eyes on the man. So, what happens to the ice staff ? I wonder if they are on zero hour contracts ? Is Brent's subsidy from the council reduced accordingly ? etc etc. Brent is like some sort of hedge fund. He could profit from public facilities failing. The citycentre ice rink usually goes up before the Winter festival lights, some time next month. The notices online from the pavillions sound as if they're about to reopen any second. Perhaps he can't source, or pay for, the parts. |

R22 gas which was used at time of installation was prohibited from being sold for recharging refrigerant systems in Dec 2014. It's an expensive job to convert to a legal substitute. The Pavillions twitter feed has updated with apology each day but no mention that cause has been fixed and Rink is being refrozen. Call me a cynic but 6 days to fix an electrical fault, really? Give me a call Jimmy, sure i could sort it, you've had me contacted before. |

| Funny how the 'leccy tripped the week after the schools went back. Don't think he would have got away with it during the Summer holidays. Looking up the city centre "attractions" for this year, I can't see any mention of the recently usual Winter outdoor ice rink this coming Autumn. It usually opens around 20 October, right through to March. Not like the council to miss out on advertising anything on their whatsonfestival pages.
Still, plenty of fish action down at the Barbican this weekend, served up with about 15 pubs.. That should tickle Iggy and Seadog. |

The big boys fail to deliver

Christmas lights city centre
THIS year's Christmas market will see the city take matters into its own hands after deciding that previous organisers did not do enough to support Plymouth traders or produce.
As reported in Wednesday's Herald, the eleven-day Christmas market will be run in-house by the City Centre Company (CCC) rather than be outsourced.
Holly Reynolds, assistant city centre manager, said the company had made the decision after being left disappointed by some of the produce on offer in past years - despite last year's being run by Marketplace Europe which has delivered Christmas markets in Manchester, Glasgow and Exeter.
This year, run in collaboration with vintage craft fair experts Miss Ivy Events and Taste of the West which specialise in regional food produce, stall holders must be from the South West and demonstrate that the items or gift ideas they are selling are regionally sourced or related to Christmas.
"The reason we are doing it ourselves is because we don't feel that those who have done it in the past have delivered," she said..
"The look has been great but it's the produce we haven't been happy with. The produce has come from here, there and everywhere, so we want to open it only to traders in the South West."
Open from Thursday November 26 to Sunday December 6, the market will be considerably shorter than in previous years, compared with a three-and-a-half week market in 2014 and a seven-week period in 2013. It will have about 20 more stalls than last year.
Mrs Reynolds said the market would not be the only attraction to keep shoppers interested, with an "exciting" announcement still in the pipeline.
"In previous years, we have had everything on at the same time but this time we want to offer each element individually," she said.
"Having the market on for eleven days means it won't impact on businesses too harshly and it is not right before Christmas, so there's plenty of time for them to benefit from last minute shoppers."
She added: "We don't need a stall selling coffee. It has to complement the existing offer in the city centre."
While organising the market internally gives the CCC "creative control", Mrs Reynolds admitted it does have monetary draw backs.
It has purchased £350,000 worth of Christmas lights, with a gold and white scheme and snowfall affects, and has shelled out for 50 log cabins and decorations out of its own pocket. The long-term investment means it does not expect to turn a profit this year.
Chris Carson, who owns Jake's Cafe in Cornwall Street, said markets can take "pounds out of the pockets" of city traders, especially those selling food, but welcomed a shortened market as a compromise.
"It is a difficult balance and it's hard to please everybody," said Mr Carson, also a CCC board member. "Last year the market didn't affect us. I think last Christmas was one of our best ever but then we don't sell bratwurst or paella. The Christmas before did affect us. It lasted seven weeks and I wasn't okay with that."
An ice rink will also return, with national company Blue Martini operating from November 19 to late January |
