| Any youngsters out there probably don't have much of a handle on quite how inspirational a player Newport's manager Terry Butcher was for England. I honestly can't think of many better CBs that we have had. He was brave as a lion, reasonably quick for a big guy and won pretty much all of his headers. In short the epithet "legend" gets bandied about a lot these days but Butcher was surely up there with Bobby Moore as being amongst the very best we have ever had in that position and it'll be a pleasure to welcome him to Home Park.
We've had our share or proper legends turn up at one time or another. George Best, Pele, Kenny Dalglish, Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, Peter Shilton all immediately spring to mind but there must be a host of others who have rocked up against us either as players or as a manager.
So who else is there? |

| Would Man Utd have achieved as much in the 1990s without Roy Keane? Felt odd sitting 10 yards behind him in the Mayflower paddock seating when he was the Ipswich manager. |

| David Moyes when Everton manager. It is a shame Rooney transferred when he did as a few months later he would have been at Home Park with Everton in that cup game.
Roy Keane is probably the best one. Didn't he nearly start a fight with an Argyle fan who was taunting him, but subsequently bottled it when Keane turned aggressive? |

Played against us as well; [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Pretty sure that Stan Matthews and Tom Finney played down here for their clubs, also remember seeing Peter Beardsley, Neville Southall and Chris Waddle playing at HP in the twilight of their careers. |

I remember that one Pete. We lost 1-0 and dear old Stan was a shadow of his former self, sad to say. Can you imagine any of today's pampered preeners playing at 50 to earn a living. |

| Yasuhiko Okudera. I remember being impressed seeing Terry Paine for Southampton, but hardly a legend. I was shocked what a dirty little player he was, considering his status in the game. Rodders of course, and big Mal. Big,big characters. Best was a disappointment with Fulham. Pele of course, but more so, the World Cup winning team, they are legends. I couldn't believe that they virtually all turned up in little ol' Plymouth, and actually played. An unforgettable night, even though the football was rather one sided. |

| If we're talking about world soccer legends then Pele, Moore, Best and Mathews are out on their own. That's if four can be on their own!
The rest are British legends which is not quite the same.
The original post from Sir Frank saying that Butcher is up there with Moore is pushing it a bit. |

The original post from Sir Frank saying that Butcher is up there with Moore is pushing it a bit. If Butcher wasn't our 2nd best ever CB then who was? Who cares. You clearly said Butcher was up there with Moore. I would argue he's light years behind him. Mind you, so is everyone else. |

| For what it's worth, Butcher is a British/English/Ipswich football legend.
He is not a World football legend.
You need more than a lions heart to be an icon. |
