The Position
Plymouth Argyle Football Club requires a full-time Head Groundsman to maintain the Home Park pitch, its surrounding areas and all training pitches.
The applicant should be passionate and committed to delivering the highest standards of grounds maintenance, and ensuring the long-term maintenance and sustainability of the grounds.
The successful candidate will have experience within the sports turf industry, be expected to work alongside and as a part of the maintenance team and have a flexible attitude in terms of the unsociable hours that will be necessary to perform the role.
Main Areas of Responsibility:
· Preparing and maintaining the playing surface and surrounding areas at Home Park to the highest standard.
· Preparing and maintaining all training pitches at Harper’s Park and other sites as required to the highest standard.
· Planning, allocation and supervision of the day-to-day work programme for the ground staff including the planning of off-peak work.
· Allocation, operation, maintenance and security of plant, tools and equipment ensuring as far as is possible, that the right resources are available and all equipment is correctly stored, maintained and serviced. Maintain equipment such as nets, posts and protective covers.
· Monitor the use of consumable items and spares and make arrangements for their replenishment. Order and purchasing of all materials, including expendable items and pesticides within budget.
· Control and safe use of all potentially dangerous substances and equipment. Ensuring that ground staff are instructed in their safe use and use of relevant safety equipment.
· Supervision as required of work undertaken by contractors to ensure compliance with the terms and conditions of the Health and Safety Act.
· Preparation of appropriate reports and correspondence, and attendance at meetings as necessary.
· Identification of ground staff training needs. Ensuring all staff receive full and proper instruction in the use of new equipment or materials and that new staff are properly inducted in safe working practices.
· Development of all ground staff, enabling them to meet the standards of work required by the Club.
· To provide a helpful and professional service to the Football Management, Academy Management and Players.
· Deal with members of the public in a professional manner.
· Any other reasonable request made by the Executive or Football Management.
Preferable Qualifications and Experience:
· Minimum of 5 years experience as a grounds person preferable in football.
· Hold a NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent qualification) in Sports Turf Management.
· Hold a PA1 and PA6 NPTC pesticide certificate or FETAC equivalent (or willing to work towards such a qualification).
· Be in possession of a clean EC driving licence.
· Possess an understanding of current Health and Safety guidelines.
· Possess an understanding of the FIFA Laws of the Game into the Field of Play.

· Possess a passion for football and sports turf maintenance.
· Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and appearance.
· Understand the seasonality nature of the role and the need for flexibility with regards to working long hours including evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays. Be on site at all times during all fixtures.
· Ability to work under pressure and alone when required.
· Ability to manage a small team.
