- Tyler Harvey has celebrated turning 20 years old this week by signing a new one-year contract with Argyle.
When asked about any potential difficulty or doubts about making such an important decision in his career, Harvey’s answer was swift: “It was pretty easy.” The belated birthday present for Tyler, a 12-month deal with the Pilgrims, comes after talks with manager Derek Adams, who has spoken of his interest in developing the youngster as a striker at Home Park. It means he’ll have plenty of attacking peers to learn from and contest with: Ryan Brunt, Jake Jervis, Reuben Reid, Louis Rooney and Deane Smalley. “That was music to my ears; I’ve always been a striker. One of my good assets, I think, is scoring, so it’s back to what I prefer doing. “We’ll all bring each other on. You can’t get complacent because there’ll be six of us (strikers) now.” The former Ivybridge Community College student first signed Centre of Excellence forms with the Pilgrims, aged 9, in July 2004, before signing as an apprentice in 2011.
His involvement with the first team increased dramatically during the 2012-13 season, making 11 appearances for the Pilgrims, including a memorable equaliser in the Boxing Day 1-1 draw with local rivals Torquay United.
The attack-minded Tyler made 24 appearances the following season, scoring in a 2-1 away win at Newport County. He kicked off last season in style with an excellent free kick and assist in Argyle’s opening home game – a 3-0 win over Exeter City – and played 16 more times during the campaign.
going to be used as a striker going forward. Happy he has finally signed his new contract now is the time to step up and prove you are all what your fans say you are and more. |

| Still only 20, so it's fair that he's been given another year to prove himself. Was never sure that Sheridan's ploy of playing him in midfield was a great idea, so we'll see how he does back up front. |

Sheridan didn't look to use forwards who used movement, intelligence and finishing as their strengths, but wanted brute power and force, and an ability to handle 50 yard passes and dominate backlines single handedly. Fine for Brunt and Reuben to play that way, harder for Tyler Harvey. Hopefully DA can vary the tactics up to see what this lad has got to give! |

Hopefully DA can vary the tactics up to see what this lad has got to give! Jeez, you do have a talent for the simplistic statement. Did Alessandra, Adam Murray or Lavery fit into that category? Utter rubbish, inspired more by "the kids deserve a chance" emotional schlock rather than any logical analysis. Judging by the fact that Jake Jervis is 6ft 3ins and Brunt and Reid are still on the books, looks as if Derek may be keen to have a bit of heading ability and physical presence up front as well. I've got nothing against against Tyler Harvey and hope he does fulfil the potential that he possesses-he can see a pass, decent technique on the ball, takes a good free kick, no arguments there. More to it than that though and if he doesn't make it on a regular basis under Adams, then it will start to seem a bit more than coincidence that managers aren't selecting him. |

| Glad Harvey has got a contract, although I generaly supported Sheridan during his reign I think he had mismanaged Tyler, although I suspect there may have been an attitude issue going on. However from what I know of Craig Brewster - as team coach, young Tyler will have to up his game, so very much up to him now to prove himself. |

More to it than that though and if he doesn't make it on a regular basis under Adams, then it will start to seem a bit more than coincidence that managers aren't selecting him. It is simplistic but it is essentially correct. Reid, Marvin, Brunt and Hayes were not signed because they had pace, made clever runs, great technical ability or were brilliant finishers. Sheridan liked a strong hold up player that is hard to bully, and that he been his priority in a forward when finding one. Lavery played about 4 games and was clearly too good for League Two level. So I won't judge Sheridan's philosophy (particularly in a conversation about Tyler Harvey) on Lavery. What does Harvey learn from Lavery's inclusion there? If you're not 6' 3" powerhouse, you had best be Championship quality if you want a game? The one true example you have me on is Alessandra. He has been the only forward who isn't a targetman that has been trusted up front for Sheridan's Argyle in two seasons (even if in one of those he played as a midfielder). We don't know how Harvey may have done alongside Reid as LA was utilised, as more often than not, if Harvey got 5 mins it was either in midfield, or he was coming on in Reuben's place with the match already won. My main point is that we really never saw anywhere near enough of Harvey as a forward under Sheridan. But you needn't restrict it to Harvey. Purrington, Allen, Richards, Bentley, none of the Academy boys played much football at all. |
