Really rather depends on what he is into. If he is football mad then a visit to the Estadio da Luz (Stadium of Light) is a must. Its where Celtic won the European Cup.
There are lots of historic buildings, churches, museums, etc. but the value of any of these is subjective.
One "not to be missed" is the Bairro Alto area, especially at night. Used to come alive later at night with small bars and cafes appearing where you might have thought there were only houses if you visited during the daytime.
To get there, there is a tram that climbs up a narrow hill from near the square near the main railway station. Its a bit of fun.
A trip to Cascais is not a must see but it is pleasant. You get to see a bit of the countryside on the train journey (which I think takes about 40 minutes). Near Cascais is Estoril where there used to be a casino with a fantastic floor show in its restaurant.
One more thing that fascinated me is to stand underneath the old Tagus bridge (a San Fransisco look-alike) simply to listen to the traffic noise. Because of the type of road surface, the traffic sounds like a swarm of bees!
Hope this helps a bit. |

| I went to see Benfica play and was seated right next to the eagle that is let loose to swoop around the place, pre-match. That was quite good.
The advice above about Bairro Alto is spot on.
Lisbon is a heady mix of faded glamour and brash modernity, blessed by an excellent Metro system too.
Go and take a look. |
