| It's always rather sad at this time of year when you see a list in the papers or on the news of the people who have died in the past year. Whether you liked them or not it sometimes feels like you've lost something if you've grown up with them in your life Anyway i'll kick off with one that shocked and saddened me, James Gandolfini (AKA Tony Soprano) a superb actor and apparently a lovely man, gone too soon at just 51. RIP |

| I'd like to remember the passing of Ray Dolby. At his memorial service there was an impecably observed minute's noise reduction. |

Not read any of Iain Banks' books but I loved one of his final statements that was something like, "I'm delighted to say that my girl-friend has accepted my proposal that she become my widow". |

I have read his books, a great but very dark writer, I also met him at a graduation day at Stirling university where he also graduated, a very intelligent man with a real presence about him. Not a fan of his Iain M Banks sci fi though. |
