| Air Passenger Duty E-petition End the 'Parent Trap' - suspend or reduce APD over school summer holidays Responsible department: Her Majesty's Treasury I am calling on the government to help British families manage the “Parent Trap” of inflated holiday prices in summer by suspending or reducing the rate of Air Passenger Duty (APD) for the annual school summer-holiday period of July and August. This will allow British families to enjoy much needed quality time together at the only time children are legally allowed to take holidays. This proposed tax break will ultimately benefit parents and teachers, who are corralled into taking holiday during the school summer break, when prices are already escalated. | Absolutely right too. I've already signed it and anyone with kids or grandchildren should as well. It's a feckin rip-off how holiday firms can double if not more their prices in school holidays. |

| Probably the thing that pisses me off more than anything. I'm double-screwed 'cos my missus is a teacher so even if we were inclined to take the kids out of school it'd be pointless as she still has to work. I paid over 4 grand for a holiday in August that would have cost £2,800 in either June or September. That's a hell of a difference. |

That's a hell of a difference. I lived with that for 100 terms ! Book the flights early and come to our place in Larnaca, Cyprus, July/ August next year. I'll even throw in the Honda Civic. No charge...............but you do have to look after the dog...............he's a beaut ! The longer you stay the better ,as I need to escape the heat, watch cricket and drink bitter. ps we'll even stay at my mum's place down the road for a few days, to show you the ropes, as she's back in the muff jul/aug. I'm serious |

I've done that trip twice this year already, once in February/March then in Augst, a big camper in February was £675 return in August with a VeeDub was £1460. I agree with Mapps really about airfare although chugging around in a campervan probably isn't the best thing for the planet. The trouble is that most holiday businesses have only six weeks to make any money and everybody goes on holiday in August, if hotels, guesthouses and resturants don't screw us all in August they might not make it through the winter, supply and demand allows them to do it. My boys don't want to holiday with us anymore but my wife works in a school for crap money so we get screwed although I am sick and tired of travelling in August, the answer is to travel in February when the whether is shit, the wife's at work so it's much cheaper all round. |
