Parkway beat Newquay today, meaning that they finished second in their league, and are therefore eligible for promotion. Parkway applied to the league to be allowed to promote this season (as is required in the lower non-league divisions) however there appears to be some confusion about whether Parkway have subsequently withdrawn that application.
The problem stems from the absence of a 'step 5' league that covers the South West, meaning that on being promoted Parkway would have to join the Western League, which is mainly full of teams in the Bristol area. Apart from being more expensive to travel to away games, and requiring a greater sacrifice from the playing staff, this would also probably result in reduced crowds, because of the absence of the local derbies Parkway get in their current league. A double whammy of increased costs and reduced income therefore making promotion a potentially bad idea.
It would be a shame if they don't choose the promote. Certainly Plymouth could easily support a decent non-league side in addition to Argyle. Indeed Parkway are probably 'bigger' than most of the teams in the league they would be promoted into, and could easily move further up into the Southern Leagues if the motivation is there for someone to push them forward. It might also benefit Argyle to have a decent quality non-league outfit in the city to loan players to, or to play reserve teams against. If they were a bit higher up the pyramid, Parkway might even represent a team that disillusioned ex-pilgrims could switch to!
Anyone here ever seen Parkway play? Does anyone else think that Plymouth could do with a 'second team'. Plenty of cities our size have a respectable non-league outfit that exist alongside a larger league team (Bradford PA and Cambridge City come to mind)!
