I used to admire Israel for the way they had grown since the centuries of persecution they suffered, had been surrounded by less than friendly neighbours and made Egypt regret taking them for granted and underestimated them.

Now I can't believe the way they are treating others. It's not self defence, and if they weren't so pally with the USA, Britain amongst others would be condemning it unreservedly, and offering to send out help. Money talks though and the Americans always jump to their defence.

Hmmm. Thing is though, what Israel have done is reacting to an action - i.e. Hamas indiscriminately firing rockets into Israel.

It sounds simplistic, but if Hamas weren't firing in the rockets, then Israel wouldn't have been given an excuse to react.

You can legally buy bigger fireworks than those rockets sent first attacking little old Israel.

There's good and bad on both sides no doubt about it, and it's hugely complicated, but Israel know they are backed up by the big boys if they want any help. And the western media don't always show the full picture.

If this was an oil rich country being pounded by Israel then loads of other countries become interested in sending the troops in to help the underdog.

Like I said I know how much crap Jews have had over the centuries but what they are now doing to others is equally as bad and the victims now need the same kind of help and sympathy Israel have received over the years.

Howard Jacobson wrote some interesting stuff on "Jewish identity" and responded to the suggestion that goes along the lines "after all the Jews have gone through, you would expect them to behave better towards others". He said that wants to make them into some super-human race whereas they're just human like most of the rest of us.

How far do you want to go back? The Balfour Declaration during WW! might be a useful starting point - where Britain said it would support the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Western powers fiddling with the politics of the region that has continued ever since.

I once watched Brian Clough's Forest playing Maccabi Tel Aviv. Not a very memorable game.

Yep. There are no absolute goodies or baddies in this. What is certain is that there are loads of people stuck in the middle and suffering.

There is an undercurrent of 'racism' (not the right word but it serves) in Israeli life. There are a substantial number of people who believe that they literally have a God-given right to live in the lands they inhabit and more (look up Eretz Y'Israel if you don't know already). When I lived there for a short while, I went to a talk given by an Israeli senior army officer. His whole message was based on this god-given right and the "fact" that the Palestinians hadn't been taking care of the country and were unlikely to as well as the Jews so they were totally justified in taking it over. There is also a substantial peace-movement in the country and in the Diaspora. The trouble is that the Israeli right wing stir up the perfectly reasonable fears amongst the populace and their wish to live without fear and threat especially when elections near.

Extremists on both sides have a vested interest in maintaining and ratcheting up the tension. Consider the assassination of Sadat in Egypt and Rabin in Israel. Amongst other things they paid the price for pursuing peace and compromise.
