Weather is definately not good for a BBQ, cold, grey and wet. My Plymouth born cat died this morning so we are going to have a wake and drink copious amounts normally associated with BBQs. Fetch me a Sagres!

I was distilling today, 130 litres of wine made 19 litres of aguadente at 52% - lovely.

I went for a walk today and walked further than I intended. That mad up for yesterday. I'm yet to make up for the day before.

Is distilling legal in Portugal? Do you have to declare it and pay duty?

Day of cooking ahead. Or should that be "Day of cooking a head"? Probably not - depends who visits.

I am going to take my binoculars for a walk today.

Just recently I have found the best time to go for a walk is between about three o'clock and five on a Saturday afternoon.

Talk about going that extra mile. Most people just take their dog.

Not much happened today.

As I haven't got a dog now I am going to take my binoculars for a walk at Slapton Ley tomorrow.

Brilliant place for bird watching (the feathered variety before Jock jumps on it)

My greatest ever "birding" day. As anybody who is into birding will know, one of South Devon's specialties is the Cirl Bunting. I was always bumping into people from all over the country who had travelled down just to see one. I live here and never had, so one day in July 2005 I set out to find one, tried Wembury first as they are often reported there, no luck, so on to Slapton, enquired at the hut as to what was about, to be told there was a nesting Cetti's Warbler, saw it, big tick, moved on towards Start Point, when a saw a camper van in a lay by with a bloke with a scope, stopped and asked if there was anything worth watching where upon he indicated a Honey Buzzard circling above, another big tick. On to Start Point where we decided to picnic in the car park, no sooner got the sarnies out when up hopped FIVE Cirl Buntings looking for crumbs. I was delighted. Thought whilst my luck was in I would try Haldon raptor point. Was welcomed by a Turtle Dove, another tick. Stayed on into the evening and managed a Nightjar as well. So that was my best ever day.

I've never gone 'hunting' birds, Pete. I wait for them to come to me.

My most exciting bird-watching was on a particular holiday on a Scottish island: short-eared owl on ground about 30 feet from me; hen harriers; eider; hobby, a jack-snipe on the ground about 4 feet away as I stopped & wound down my car window; peregrine; divers; goldeneye; ring ouzel; etc. etc. You could hardly turn around without seeing something out of the ordinary!

Never seen cirl buntings, Cetti's or nightjar though.

A couple of days ago I watched a peregrine from my window flying around the viaduct here. First time for 3 or 4 years. This used to be a regular until I found a dead one in Cotehele woods. I hope it stays.

Is it just me who thought Pete's exploits were more interesting by substituting "dogging" for "birding" Embarassed
