| That's it really, what are the chances of it happening - it's possible looking at the table. |

| Ah but if we wait until 9 league games have gone, if we then have more than one point, it's an improvement on last season.
Sorted then. |

| Obviously depends on other results but there's a good chance we'll assume our permanent position at the very bottom of the football league tomorrow. Operation 'Silence Dissent' will be stepped up by the brent lovers, you know those who bafflingly support brent far more than they do the team. The very same idiots who were screeching "trust in stapes!" a couple of years back. |

| I think there is a pretty good chance of us being bottom tomorrow, add to that the inevitable defeat at Turf Moor on Tuesday ...any other club of Argyles stature in League 2 would be howling for the managers head, but no....as long as we have a jumped up Union boy and his mate advising Brent on how to keep us in League 2 or below for the long haul nothing will ever change, the lobotomized masses over on Pasoti will remain embarrassingly compliant as they always have been .... we have Aviva fests, giant flags, Forza Nerd, Jester hats, wigs, Pilgrim pasties and a family area hardly anyone wants. This club gets more and more Village with every passing day. |

This club gets more and more Village with every passing day. That's complete and utter nonsensical drivel. Have you actually looked on pasoti at all over the past week? There's more posters on there who are negative towards Carl Fletcher than pro. There's criticism all over the place for Forza Thingy Ma Bob and people aren't happy about a lot more than just the poor results and lack of goals. |

| I'm not in disagreement with you but how many of you are dissenters without backing your judgement? On Betfair £50 on Oxford to win will give you a healthy £37.50 profit. Who is in? Who is confident that Argyle are shit? I saw them 3 days ago, they are that shit |

Shonbo...one who is not very broad minded, one who does not know what the rest of the country/world is doing. One who lives within ones four walls.Historically people who never used to venture far.Could apply that to most things in the Westcountry is what I am trying to say,not just the footy club. |

Add to that a leisure centre that from Outland Rd, looks like its design was based on a Soviet nuclear power station... |

Did you see that Yorkshire if they were a country would have been 14th in the medal tables? That is not village. In my experience some of the problems Plymouth has is that everything is done on the cheap with no horizon of achievement. Aspiration is limited. Casey Kasem used to say "Keep your feet on the ground and keep shooting for the stars". In Plymouth that would be "Keep your feet on the ground (and watch where you're standing) and keep watching just what is behind you because you don't want to fall over" I'm only one of two out of 20 of my cousins, uncles etc that moved out of Plymouth. Although I would love to move back (probably Cornwall if I'm honest) I work in London for economic reasons. All my family when I go back ask how it is "up the line"? FFS, it's as if Gordano's requires a passport....! The previous board had a Plymouth clique and a London clique. Stapes was a Plymouth businessman made good in his locality but a pauper in the world he began to habit and it showed. Frankly his haircut would have been enough for me!!!! Unfortunately he was besotted with the new finance offered by a Sir Gardner and missed the opportunities offered by proper Argyle fans via a consortium and indeed by an axis offered by Peter Jones, Michael Foot (God rest) and other connections. That is Stapes' greatest failing, he didn't realise when he was playing poker with hands beyond his wealth. Anyway its a long post as to what is village. A colleague of mine has just sent his daughter to a public school. As a man of the left I questioned him. His answer could be compared as to what is village. "At a state school she gets what's on the curriculum, in a public school no-one ever says the words "you can't do that" there are no horizons other than talent itself" Apologies for a wooly answer but ambition, expectations and resources are vital in growing a belief that a club can succeed. |

| thanks for the replies. It gets used a lot on here and consequently loses some of its impact.
TBH, I don't feel able to comment as I moved away when I was 16 and am not as in touch with the area as I once was, having no family in or around the town and only very distant relatives down in Cornwall.
I think you're right tho' about Stapes missing a trick with the other consortium, although all I ever knew of that was thro' pasoti.
I first saw us play in a 3rd div season and were near bottom at Christmas; walking away from games like a 2-2 draw against Halifax, when we were 2-0 down and feeling ecstatic.
Watching Mariner's debut for the reserves etc and enjoying it all. We've gone up, we've gone down, the bad times make the good times feel even better, but watching last year's team and the quality of football made me think it was time to forget it. However, I figured, results and staying up are the key things last season so fair enough.
I go tomorrow more in curiosity than hope and certainly not in expectation for my first game of the season. Never felt this way before. I wonder how I will feel this time tomorrow.
Sorry for the ramble... |

Anyway its a long post as to what is village.

"Village" was used quite a lot in cricket circles when i was playing to describe low quality play or facilities, presumably because village cricket was/is regarded as the lowest form of the game compared to club [basically played by towns] and professional cricket.Rather unjust actually,as there were many very useful village teams around this area, some of who no longer exist, unfortunately. Great post BTW,sums the situation up in a nutshell. |

| And theres the conundrum.
Does village = a place where people know each other, trust each other; have a sense of community; where a place is small enough to maintain a sense of identity without having to fight; where looking out for your neighbour is the norm; where crime is minimal; where the excitement of activity is the norm; where all the women are strong, the men are good looking and the children are above average (thank you GK)?
Or is a village where curtains twitch; where rich people rule and poor people are marginalised; where the real world is excluded; where minds are small where a sense of belonging or history is even smaller; where torpor is the norm; where anyone who isn't a middle-aged WASP stands out as different; where everyone is at home, with the doors locked by 8:00?
I've lived in both.
Calstock won't give a toss if we are bottom of the league tomorrow. Sadly, I fully expect it.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I don't really follow cricket - though I have watched some of Calstock's football matches. But the last I heard the owner of the land where the cricket is currently played wants it back. They were appealing for somewhere else to play. |
