It was pissing down that night, doubt if the match would be played now.We went into a pub reasonably close to the ground before the game and the people in there were conversing in English. As soon as we ordered our three pints of lager or whatever in English, mysteriously they suddenly starting yakking away in Welsh, feck knows what they were saying about us.Quick drink and even quicker exit. There were about 3000 there that night and at least half of them were Argyle fans, which gives lie to the theory that clubs now attracting bigger gates than us have always had a large and loyal following-look at their gates and facilities now in comparison after a period of success.Makes you want to weep. |

| Didn't John Matthews score the winner that night? I think it was the only time I ever seen him head a ball. You are right Greenskin as I believe there were more away fans than Cardiff fans. I get goosebumps thinking back. Didn't we water the pitch to get the Bristol City game called off because Tynan couldn't play? I remember my disappointment walking to the ground hearing it was off. The rest is history. |

Think it was a diving header at the near post from Matthews, great player but as you say not noted for his heading ability.Seem to remember that someone had a penalty saved and Hodges scored the rebound for the other goal.It was rumoured that the pitch was watered for the Turnips game, don't know if it was true or not.I know that Argyle were desperately short of numbers because Terry Journeaux,a very good local player [played against him a couple of times, scarily quick at that level] who was on Argyle's books, was due to play if Tynan couldn't make it.Certainly wouldn't put it past Smithy to do something like that,a wily old bird well versed in the black arts. |

| Dave Smith a great manager, with the right backing would have taken argyle to the first division without a doubt, but as we all know that never happens with argyle. |
