That's how little it takes to sway the electorate.

Very true. I believe these are views that are sweeping across the Labour Party at the moment. There'll be an uprising and revolution as soon as there's an excuse to have it.

The new Councillor here in Devonport worries me. She's an 18 year old schoolgirl.

Now, before anyone accuses me of sexism or ageism, i'm neither of those. It's good to see young people getting involved in politics - I joined the Labour Party when I was 16, and women are woefully under-represented at all levels of British politics.

No, the thing that worries me is that I may have a problem or concern that requires my new councillor's attention. And by raising the matter with her, I'm worried that I may feel guilty about interrupting her Sociology homework.

I wouldn't worry about the homework, if she was truly representive of Devonport at 18 she would have 2 kids in tow.

I would say in all seriousness she has proved herself worthy of representing the area, simply because she had the "balls" to stand for election. Her experience is her inexperience and that is no bad thing. Her enthusiasm will triumpth over her lack of experience. good luck to her.

In the early 1980's I was a local spokeperson for Greenpeace, I even have a degree in Russian History. Prime left wing voter material, however I am a businessman and have never voted Labour. I vote for the person not the party, the principle not the ideology. I am not constrained or restricted in my beliefs only to vote for one party. IMO Labour and the Tories are equally corrupt.

Spookily, I've also got a degree in Russian history.

Living proof that there are educated wankers living in Devonport. Lots of us, actually.

I have just joined the youth sector of the Liberal Democrats, don't ask me why, but after a couple hours of looking through the websites 'Labour', 'Conservatives', 'Lib dems' and 'BNP' there approach seems the most sensible.

The BNP has always been off interest to me Ali, purely because they believe in pulling us out of Europe, slowing immigration, and that I think Nick Griffin is a clever man, and a good leader. Unfortunately, their supporters tell a totally different story, the leaders of the BNP (in my opinion) are not racist, however without their totally racist supporters the BNP would not be the 4th biggest political party in the UK (I still put them above UKIP in ranking as UKIP's policy is to intercept angry Conservatives). The BNP are not as disgusting as people say, their supporters are!

A few select quotes from the (according to Cobi) non-racist Nick Griffin:

'The ultimate aim for me and for the BNP still remains an all-white Britain.'
Financial Times, April 2002

'The only measure which is going to stop immigration . . . is to get very tough with those coming over. Frankly, they need to sink several of those boats. I say the boats should be sunk, they can throw them a life raft, and they can go back to Libya.'
BBC News, July 2009

'Yes, Adolf went a bit too far. His legacy is the biggest problem that the British nationalist movement has to deal with. It just creates a bad image'.
Mail on Sunday, April 2006

'I am well aware that the orthodox opinion is that six million Jews were gassed and cremated and turned into lampshades. Orthodox opinion also once held that the world is flat. . . I have reached the conclusion that the "extermination" tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie, and latter witch-hysteria.'
Panorama, 2001

'It's well-known that the chimneys from the gas chambers at Auschwitz are fake, built after the war ended.'
Mail on Sunday, April 2006

Still think the BNP leadership isn't racist, Cobi?

If you really are planning upon studying Politics, you need to start by improving your research.

Although the Lib Dems approach might seem the most sensible, they don't keep their promises do they? It's fine having a nice set of policies if you have no intention of actually carrying any of them out (e.g. PR, Tuition Fees).

Andy has already dealt with the Griffin/Racist debate. There are non-racist parties that believe in pulling out of Europe; the Socialist Party being one of them. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Not this time. In fact the last Respect candidate in the local elections in Plymouth was in Devonport in 2006. Some geezer called Andy Symons.

I think block4green is looking for either attention or an argument.

Can I also suggest that B4G reads the BNP 2010 election manifesto that may open his eyes.

I agree with Peggy it is a good job you have to be 18 to vote.

I'd agree with Pete. I just hope Mr Budge actually looks beyond the surface and sees the sordid muck underneath the BNP gloss. And to be fair he has sort of acknowledged that. I'm bothered though at all the opening lines that go "I'm not racist/homophobic/sexist/prejudiced but ....... ".
