On the DiCanio thing. As I understand it DiCanio's fascist salute is becuase he extols the virtues of Mussolini's Fascist idealogy. I'd
guess DiCanio only does this in Italy and nowhere else as many in other countries (apart from historians) don't really understand the history and the difference between the Mussolini's Fascism and Hitler's Nazism. The Roman salute was of course adopted by Hitler's Nazis as well as Mussolini's Fascists. But Mussolini's Fascist party was not the Nazis. It was different. The main difference was that race was central to Hitler's Nazi ideology i.e. diferent races are separate with the Ayran race being superior. This was not the case with Mussolini's Fascists. Mussolini's Fascism (which came to power in the early 1920s more than 10 years before Hitler) shared a lot with the Nazis in that it was totalitarian, extremely nationalist, and militarist but there was no racial ideology. It was more like Franco's Falangist regime which lasted in Spain until 1975 when Franco died. But Mussolini threw Italy into the Axis in WW2 and collaborated with the most evil regime the Earth has ever witnessed. As did other European Axis countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary and Finland. However, Franco stayed nuetral despite the considerable assistance from Hitler in the Spanish civil war. Basically, Italians don't view their fascist past with the same levels of shame and regret as the Germans view their Nazi past.
