Plymouth Argyle can confirm the purchase of the Green Taverners Supporters Bar adjacent to Home Park Stadium.
Argyle have worked closely with the Green Taverners in recent years to provide a match day experience for the Green Army, but the venue will now come under full ownership of the club to provide extra event space.
The purchase of the Green Taverners building will increase match day hospitality next season by 250 covers per match, while providing an anticipated extra £1million of income per season to the football club.
Downstairs will continue as a sports bar which will incorporate a premium general admission offer, which will provide Argyle fans with a place to get food and drink ahead of matches, and non-match day events such as weddings and wakes will continue.
Argyle Head of Venue and Events, Christian Kent, said upon the announcement: “This is another important step forward as we aim to become the number one multi-purpose venue in the South West, and beyond.
“The purchase of the Green Taverners allows the club to expand its match day offering, as demand is currently exceeding supply, and continue the excellent non-match day events that were already happening.
“The Green Taverners as an event space will also further complement our offering for our summer concert and events schedule and provide important revenue for the football club as we look to take the next steps on our five-year mission.
“I am excited to welcome supporters into our newly branded space from next season.”
The Green Taverners will continue to have their own dedicated space with a marquee located next to the gym on the Mayflower Quarter.
Gary McGuire, of the Green Taverners, added: “The Green Taverners has always been an organisation that prides itself on supporting the club and its fans through good times and bad.
“The supporters bar was always therefore built with the long-term intention of handing the building back to the club when the time was right. The committee and I felt that time was now as the football club continues to develop and enter the next stage of their mission.
“I’m extremely proud of the business the Green Taverners have built over the past five years, and this is a testament to the hard-working staff, many volunteers and of course our dedicated members.
“Whilst the Green Taverners will continue to operate, we are looking forward to doing so whilst enjoying the match day experience without the stresses of operating a 7 day a week business.
“On behalf of all the Green Taverners I would like to thank everyone who has supported us, and I’m extremely pleased that the Green Taverners will still have a dedicated venue on match days at Home Park.”
The existing Green Taverners Supporters Bar will become known as the Far Post Club, a reference long-time fans will be familiar with.
For decades, located in one corner behind the Mayflower Grandstand, the original Far Post Club was a haven for the Green Army. Over the years, memberships were paid, pints were sunk, and football conversation flowed. The renaming is a nod to our history; an acknowledgement that football stretches beyond the 90 minutes and becomes a social focal point which brings us together.
