Thanks to one of the many excellent music programmes on BBC4 last night, I was driven to find some old Gilbert O'Sullivan tracks. I defy anybody to listen to Nothing Rhymed and suggest the man can't write great lyrics.

In other news, I'm afraid I didn't make it to Pepsi's grand-daughter's football match. Trying to fit a quart into a pint pot, Pepsi - sorry.

Devon lost 6 - 4 in an entertaining game, the difference was the keepers, Devons was awful, Somersets was good.

Readers' group today. Once again I haven't finished the book. Nearly threw it out the window, it was so bad.

I am two books ahead of my Book Group. I'm seriously considering stopping even though I've only been to two meetings.

The first one I could have set fire to - at least it would have offered something useful in the cold weather. A memoir from some bloke called James Lees-Milne from the inter-war years up to the 60's. I just hope whoever chose it did so either from a sense of mischief or because the attitudes expressed were of historical interest ..... I couldn't engage with someone who talked about their family's lack of money whilst attending Eton & Oxford. Or who talked about "our" church in the grounds of their house. Or who referred to the family's servants and generally scorned "ordinary people". Or referred to his admiration for Oswald Moseley who, admittedly, 'went a little too far'.

The second one was Sebastian Faulkes' James Bond novel - Devil May Care. It was like reading a comic. The only saving grace was a paragraph in the middle where the baddie, (who was going to start a world war by bombing Russia's nuclear storage site using a British passenger aircraft as well as spread heroin addiction in the west via the importation of super-cheap stuff), said that he had considered bringing down British society by installing a foreign puppet media mogul who would take over The Times and various other of the press and bring it down-market, spreading porn and lies. He decided against that as it would take too long clown .

My choice, "Kleinzeit" by Russel Hoban will be after those two. I've read several of his but not that one. My ex-wife used to rave about that novel. I wonder how it will go down .....

What a lovely walk. The sun is shining. The birds are singing. The river is flowing and lower than I can recall ever seeing it. The daffodils are effulgent in the hedgerow (sorry, I've never used that word before and the opportunity arose). The primroses are blooming. I'm out this evening with a group of friends. All's well with the world.

Bet it doesn't bloody last.

There you go. New word of the day for me. Thanks knecht, never heard that one before. I'll be trying to slip it into conversation on a daily basis from now on.

Book group turned out well. Only two people (one the librarian who organises the group and presumably has to) had actually read the whole book - and neither of them had much good to say about it. We spent a very pleasant hour pulling it comprehensively apart. Next book is A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon: he also wrote The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which I've never got round to reading, so I got that out as well.

On the way home, I was thinking about things to do with the four year old on wet days, and came up with some ideas for stuff we could make. This led me to wonder where a particular bag of knitting wool might be. This led me to completely turn out my knitting chest and two cupboards, one of which involves getting the stepladder out. This led me to find a load of sewing fabrics* I'd forgotten I had, all packed away neatly in carrier bags. This led me to disaster, as some of said carrier bags were not only biodegradable, they'd actually started to biodegrade into little yellow flakes which got everywhere. This led me to have to get the Dyson out, which led me to do all sorts of other cleaning while I was at it. Two and a half hours later, everything was back in order, it was too late for an afternoon nap, and I'd only found some of the stuff I was looking for.

It'll have to do.

(*Yes. I'm quite good with my hands.)

More information for knecht, albeit in Portuguese.
effulgent, adj. brilhante, resplandecente - which are quite similar to our English.
However, try using the verb tomorrow (I know I will), effulge (to) v.
Just in case you bump into a Pork and Cheese, fulgir might be useful. Present tense...
eu fuljo
tu fulges (familiar)
ele fulge
nos fulgimos
eles fulgem
Obviously, if you stuff two cheesy wotsits and pork scratchings in your nostrils, you'll get the hang of this poxy language.

It was very foggy on my trip down to Redruth early this morning. It was sunny in Roche this afternoon though but Plymouth was miserable when I got home.

The Curious Incident... is v. good Peggy. I nearly started a 'what are you reading?' thread on here the other day but after my 'what are your fave websites?' thread took about three months to get a response to I thought better of it. Oh, and China Meilville's Kraken since you didn't ask.

Also, I think I'm getting RSI in my right arm. Tingly.

Got such a lot to do, I've just made a Things To Do list so I don't forget anything. The first thing on it is 'make things to do list'.

Something to cross off, innit.

I managed to get up in time to put my bin-bag out. It was very full. I hadn't put it out last week. Luckily there was no fish in it.

Now, I have to put myself out. Spending the morning with friends. But it's grey and damp - I'd rather stay indoors.

I already have oven-gloves. I already have a list (probably due to me having broken my ankle a while ago).

Forgot to put 'catch up on ATD' on the list. I shall now write it on and cross it out immediately.

Or maybe write it on but leave the smug pleasure of crossing it out til a bit later.

Was offered a round of golf at China Fleet today, but couldn't go as the tee off time was 3pm and I wouldn't have been back in time for snooker tonight.

Sometimes, life gets too complicated.
