As with any work, pay a decent wage that reflects the work you’re doing and there’ll be people willing to do it. |

Its the long hours and time away from home that isnt appealing to newer people as much anymore to train as a log distance driver which is what the country needs and needed even before brexit as alot of the drivers then where approaching retirement. |

| Talking of Doris where is the gormless prick whilst the country implodes from every direction.... Still hungover from the weekend booze doubtless along with copious amounts of marching powder
A country in chaos, petrol pumps closed and the Government is apparently refusing to put up Ministers for interview again tomorrow for fear of disturbing the Labour Party conference. The cynical amongst you might think they are just terrified of answering for it
They are.... |

The point I’m making is it doesn’t matter how unappealing a job is. The only thing that matters is the wages are at a level that make the job worth doing. A couple of my mates worked on the oil rigs for a few years. It’s very unappealing to be in the middle of the North Sea for three or four solid weeks at a time, but the money on offer more than made it worthwhile. |

HGV driving isnt on that level of dangerous or inconvenience unless your one of those who drives a hgv across ice in usa. For whatever reason it struggles to attract people to do it long haul and its not the money. |

| There is driver shortage in Germany
As early as 2020, logistics analysts Transport Intelligence reported that Germany had an industry gap of between 45,000 and 60,00 HGV drivers. Predictions for 2024 see this number increasing to up 185,000 by 2027.
In France, there has been a shortage of 43,000 drivers since 2019 and Italy reports a deficit in drivers of around 15,000.
This is the main issues relating to pay and working conditions across the industry.

| I do 4 on/4 off. I don't go any further north than Avonmouth or further South than Newquay. The work is clean, easy and the pay is very good for this neck of the woods - with another pay rise coming end of this month! New trucks, generous annual leave, full pay from day one if you go sick, free uniform, private health care and one of the very few remaining final salary pensions. The only downside is, sometimes you just don't know what time you'll get home, or (puts morbid hat on) 'if' you'll come home! The absolute worst part of the job is that we get free pasties! So, I ain't going nowhere. My 18th year this year with company. This job will see me out until retirement - if the pasties don't finish me off first! |

| As for wages my brother drives a lorry for Royal mail he gets £21k a year. He's due to retire in about five years, not sure if he can be replaced by someone with a media studies or surf scientists degree? As for hiring them from abroad saw a graph on the Beeb that said Poland are short of 125,000 drivers and France, Germany ect. were down in the range of 40k to 60k. |

Give a driver a decent wage and conditions and they'll give long and decent service. Unfortunately, BP now use a logistic contracter called 'Hoyer Petrolog' (German owned?). Anyway, my link (from the Daily Mirror - not to be confused with the Express) and you can see exactly what these highly skilled drivers have to put up with.... https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/lorry-driver-blames-bp-contractors-25069748 |

It’s a real shame that Remain supporters only have 2 horrible biased national newspapers to feed our opinion. If only we were lucky enough to be able to choose from the other 5 fiercely independent and neutral papers who provide such balanced coverage during these horribly tumultuous and divisive times. |

I make it more than 2 when you add The Observer and The Financial Times. Then there's news-sheets like The New European (a real corker of a pro-EU paper) and the New Statesman. Following those you get sundry hard left titles like Morning Star, Socialist Worker etc, For my part, I read newspapers online which means that Times/Telegraph are a closed book because of their paywall. Since Rupert Murdoch sold SKY UK to CNN, the news channel has had a complete change of direction so don't expect any more fisticuffs between Adam Boulton and Alistair Campbell - both singing from the same hymn sheet as of now. That’s not the first time you have posted a link from the Daily Mail complaining that the BBC is biased. Just to check….you are aware of the irony of that? So Jon Snow doesn’t like the Tories. Does that mean he controls C4s news agenda? Does that mean all of their output is invalid? So by that logic do you accept that Tory supporting journalists provide biased coverage against the opposition? Or is it just journalists that have differing opinions to you? In my opinion news should be news. It shouldn’t have a political bias. It’s too important to be controlled by people and organisations with vested interests in controlling the narrative. |
