STRIKER Dom Telford was a late withdrawal from the team sheet in Tuesday’s 3-1 pre-season defeat at Torquay United after suffering a mild concern with a thigh injury.

Argyle manager Ryan Lowe took the safety first option by taking Dom out of the team and also restricted game-time for new signing Callum McFadzean, but goalkeeper Alex Palmer was given a full debut after joining from West Brom.

“He [Telford] came in and his thigh was a bit tight,” said Ryan. “I’m very cautious with stuff like that and my gut instinct was for him to get his gear off and take a shower.

“He wanted to play but he’s done what I asked him to do. It’s a precaution and we were cautious with McFadzean as well because it’s different for Alex [Palmer], who has been away with West Brom and is game-ready. Rather than lose him [Telford] for two or three weeks, we lost him for this game.”

Calum Dyson is another Pilgrim on the treatment table and has gone to the National Football Centre at St George’s Park for extra recovery work on a niggling ankle complaint.

Ryan Taylor and Danny Mayor were the other absentees on Tuesday night, along with Ryan Law and Will Aimson, who will stay at home while the Pilgrims embark on a pre-season tour of Spain this week.

“Dyson has gone to St George’s Park because he had stuff with his ankle last year, so he’s gone there for a bit of rehabilitation,” said the gaffer. “He’s lasted all the running [in pre-season] but he was struggling with his ankle, so he’s gone there while we go to Spain. We will see Calum next Wednesday at Buckland and monitor him for that.

“Ryan Taylor rolled his ankle in head tennis yesterday, so more precaution. Danny Mayor was the same after the game at Plymouth Parkway. He wanted to play but he had a bit of swelling.

“We’ll work with them while we’re away for a week and be a bit more solid. We’re missing one or two key players as well and one or two more to come in.

“The only players not coming to Spain are Ryan Law with a knee problem, Calum Dyson is at St George’s Park and Will Aimson.”

Plymouth Argyle striker Calum Dyson is on a week-long rehabilitation programme as he attempts to finally put an ankle problem behind him.

The 22-year-old has not travelled with the rest of the Pilgrims’ squad to their Spanish pre-season training camp in Alicante.

Instead, he is spending this week at the St George’s Park national football centre.

Dyson signed on loan for Stevenage at the end of January but his move was ruined by the ankle problem.

It meant the former Everton striker did not play in any games for Stevenage as his season was ended early.

Dyson did feature as a substitute for Argyle in their first pre-season game, the 1-0 defeat at Truro City on July 9.

But he was absent from the squad when the Pilgrims beat Plymouth Parkway 2-0 on Saturday.

St George’s Park is described as the most advanced sports medicine, rehabilitation, performance science and training centre in the UK.

Dyson will be assessed by Argyle’s staff before they play a pre-season game at Buckland Athletic next Wednesday.

Argyle manager Ryan Lowe told Plymouth Live: “Dyson has gone to St George’s Park. He had an operation (last season) and he’s there for a rehab.

“The boy has come back fit, strong, he has lasted all the running, albeit at times he has been lagging a little bit.

“He was struggling with his ankle a little bit so we have sent him to St George’s Park for a week while we are in Spain.

“We will give him the weekend off when he gets back and then we will look to see Calum next Wednesday at Buckland Athletic.

“We will monitor him and see how he is for that, but he needs to get it right. He has got a lot of mobility he needs to do on it.”

Dyson signed a two-year contract with Argyle last summer after leaving Everton.

However, he made only a couple of appearances during 2018/19, both as a substitute in Checkatrade Trophy group games against Swindon Town and Newport County.
