Appledore shipyard closed

Final hooter sounded at 1230 today.

185 years of shipbuilding ended. Some will get work in Plymouth, but specific skills suck as blacksmithery are now lost to the country. Sad day.

Very sad but the final hooter has blown many times in the past. Let's hope something turns up.

I remember going there on a school trip from Barnstaple when I was a kid to see The Golden Hind replica being built. I believe that one sank somewhere. Anyway it was full of wooden boats back then.

You might be able to spot yourself!



Babcock only leased the property and the leaseholders say they are committed to maintaining a shipyard but it doesn't look good.
