| Striker Calum Dyson must use a reserve team hat-trick for Plymouth Argyle to set him up for a strong finish to the season.
That is the hope of first team coach Kevin Nancekivell after Dyson netted three times in a 7-0 rout of Cheltenham Town in the Central League on Tuesday afternoon.
All of his goals came in the second half of a one-sided contest at Home Park.
Dyson, 22, has endured a difficult time at Argyle since he was signed from Premier League club Everton last summer.
His only two first team appearances this term have been as a substitute in Checkatrade Trophy group games.
He was paired up front with Ryan Taylor against what was effectively Cheltenham’s under-18s’ side and came up with three good finishes
Nancekivell told Plymouth Live after the match: “Dyce is a centre-forward and it’s his job to bring goals to the table, and he did that today. He took his goals really well.
“He has scored three goals in a reserve team game so he should be full of confidence and take a lot from that.”
Dyson has now scored four goals in as many Central League games this season.
He has also netted 18 times in 13 starts for the Pilgrims’ side in the South West Peninsula League.
However, he has been very much on the outside looking when it comes to first team selection.
Nancekivell said: “Dyce is a motivated young man. You try and keep the training bright and you try and keep everybody involved, which we do.
“It’s part of football unfortunately that everybody is not going to play as many minutes as they want.
“Dyce has had a stop-start season in that respect, but he has got his three goals today so hopefully that will kick-start into a better finish to the season for him.”
The game against Cheltenham saw goalkeeper Matt Macey return to action after a dead leg.
The Arsenal loan signing missed two matches because of the problem, with Kyle Letheren taking over from him.
Macey was then named among the substitutes for the 3-2 win away to Southend United last Saturday.
The 6ft 6in shot-stopper played for 65 minutes against Cheltenham before he was replaced by first-year professional.
That change was made so that 19-year-old Cooper could get some game-time, and not because of any injury issue to Macey.

| Oscar Threlkeld made a goalscoring return to action for Plymouth Argyle when they thrashed Cheltenham Town 7-0 in the Central League at Home Park on Tuesday afternoon.
It was his first run-out since re-signing for the Pilgrims on loan from Belgian top flight club Waasland-Beveren until the end of the season.
Threlkeld played the whole of the match in central midfield and scored Argyle’s fourth goal with a terrific shot from outside the penalty area.
The 24-year-old has not played any first team football with Waasland-Beveren since August.
Argyle first team coach Kevin Nancekivell believes it will not take Threlkeld long to get up to speed fitness-wise with the rest of the squad.
Nancekivell told Plymouth Live: “Oscar completed 90 minutes, which was good to see.
“He hasn’t had too much football lately so he needed 90 minutes, but I thought he got stronger as the game went on.
“He scored a cracking goal as well. It was a great drive from 20 yards.
“Oscar is a player who is capable of scoring goals from central midfield, or as we saw last season he can play at right-back.”
Threlkeld re-signed for Argyle last week and was an unused substitute for the 3-2 away League One win against Southend United on Saturday.
Nancekivell added: “He’s a great addition to the squad. It’s like he has never been away.
“He’s a popular member of the changing room and you can’t have too many good characters in and around you, especially with the position we are in at the minute.
“Fitness-wise, he’s playing a little bit of catch-up but he has worked really hard in training.
“Now he has had a good 90 minutes. Oscar is a fit lad and he will get up to speed very quickly.”
Threlkeld is likely to be on the bench again when Argyle host Coventry City in League One on Saturday.
Striker Calum Dyson scored a second half hat-trick as a strong Pilgrims’ side proved far too strong for Cheltenham.
Argyle had 11 professionals on duty while Cheltenham’s team was made up entirely of academy players.
Ryan Taylor and Luke Jephcott were also on target for the Pilgrims, and Cheltenham also conceded an own goal close to half-time to leave them trailing 2-0.
Nancekivell said: “We have got to be pleased. We have had a clean sheet and seven goals to boot, and I think that’s always a positive.
“We were ruthless in both boxes, and it keeps the momentum going. We have had two great wins with the first team.
“Now we have had another good afternoon for all concerned and we can look forward to taking that into Saturday’s game at home to Coventry.”
Nancekivell continued: “We had a strong side out there, which is good to see. Lots of players are pushing for places.
“It’s healthy competition, which is what we are going to need from now until the end of the season.”
Argyle now have a record of four wins and a draw from their five Central League fixtures this term.
Their next game in the competition is away to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday, February 5.
Argyle: Matt Macey (Michael Cooper 65 mins); Joe Riley, Scott Wootton, Peter Grant, Tafari Moore; Lionel Ainsworth, Oscar Threlkeld, Dan Rooney (Ryan Law h/t), Luke Jephcott; Ryan Taylor (Alex Fletcher 65 mins), Calum Dyson. Substitutes (not used): Alex Battle, Jordan Bentley. |

I bet he doesn't ware cords. Thinking about that reminds me that Dyson (not the player) has said that his latest cleaners will be cordless. So he isn't well plugged in after all. |
