Derek Adams is targeting more than just League One survival for his Plymouth Argyle side this season.

The Pilgrims’ boss believes they can aim for a mid-table finish over the final four months of the campaign.

Argyle are in 23rd position with 20 games still to play, following their vital 3-0 New Year’s Day victory over Oxford United at Home Park.

That result saw them close to within two points of 22nd-placed Oxford, and three points behind a position of safety.

However, Adams also has his sights set on higher up the league table.

He said: “We are chasing the teams around about 11th and 12th position I think at this moment in time.

“We are 10 points behind them, which is really close, so from that point of view the league becomes tighter and tighter.

“But we have to get ourselves out of the bottom zone first of all to then look even further (up the table).”

Argyle are 10 points adrift of 11th-placed Fleetwood Town and Accrington Stanley, who are 12th.

The Pilgrims also trail the 13th-15th-placed trio of Burton Albion, Wycombe Wanderers and Walsall by eight points.

Adams said: “There are a few teams that are in freefall around about mid-table if you look at their results.

“We feel that if we can get a grip of them we can go past them, but we have got to get to them first before we can do that.”

Argyle are without a league game this weekend as Walsall, their scheduled opponents are in FA Cup third round action at Bolton Wanderers.

So the Pilgrims are having a short break before renewing their fight against relegation away to Southend United on Saturday, January 12.

Adams said: “I think that over the years we have always enjoyed the run-in.

“We know the finishing line is near so we have got to pick up wins, and we did that against Oxford.

“We picked up a very good away point at Burton Albion so the players are in confident mood.”

Just a mid-table finish with our crowds is a disgrace. Our current league position is nothing short of a scandal and completely unacceptable and those responsible need to be held fully to account.

The braindeads who believe they have been saved and are lucky to still have a club thanks to the squire, will view finishing mid table as akin to winning the league such is the level of janner expectations.

Bit strange really.I think the OP posted this as a stick to beat Adams with for venturing to suggest that Argyle could possibly finish in the top 12,then a fair few posters slate the guy off for aiming as low as mid table. Quite agree that all things being equal then mid table is far from a satisfactory position for a club like Argyle............ but then all things are far from being equal.

The point 'I' was alluding to was that mid table, this season, would be unbelievably fantastic, if not nigh-on impossible or just plain delusional. But, in the general scheme of things, mid table is a shit target to set yourselves.
