| It's not even their reserve team - it's their U21s. |

And thankfully so. We don't want distractions like this hampering the promotion push. |

| It's only our first team getting absolutely annihilated by a youth team, some of whom might not even yet make it as full professionals.
The Cheltenham score is what you should expect from such an encounter.
We really are shit |

| Good job is was only Chelsea's youth team and not their reserves. It would have been double figures by half time. |

| What makes this format so unreal and counter productive for the serfs, is Argyle, even under Adams, can go and play Liverpool's top team and supposedly run them close. There's something quite sinistre about le crap. I could put my finger on it, but can't be bothered. We all know roughly what it is. but most choose to ignore it. That's choice for you. |

| Just looked at Pasoti and it was the usual missing the point by a thousand miles crap about this being a shit competition. Shit competition it may be but Argo's first team were still completely outclassed and played completely off the pitch by some kids. Roll on Sunderland they all say LOL. |

| Attendance: 1504
Remember when this new, improved League Trophy was sold to us on the basis that fans would flock to see Premiership youth teams!
Tickets were £8 for an adult and £1 for a U18. Hard to see how we could have made any money out of the match tonight. Gate receipts probably well under 10k. |

| i went to the game, totally out played at times. the defence proved tht despite winning 2 on the bounce they are so weak against pace.
a rehash of this competition is needed as its not working this current format. |

| I paid 9 canada $ (£5) to watch, when the second went in I said to the wife it will be 5. Moore, Songo'o and Cooper was not up to it. Nice new fence a bit close to the touch line. |

| I find it hard to disagree with this,
It is time for the Checkatrade Trophy to be shown the red card Plymouth Argyle lost 5-0 to Chelsea under-21s at Home Park on Tuesday night, By Danny Salman
If it was up to me, the Checkatrade Trophy, or EFL Trophy, or whatever they are calling it these days, would be got rid of.
It is a competition which has failed since it started. The powers that be have tried to revamp it in many ways, but everything they’ve tried has made it worse.
Back in the day, it was a competition for teams from the old third and fourth divisions. It gave them a chance to have their day out at Wembley.
It was called so many things – the JPT, the Freight Rover Trophy and so on.
I managed to reach the final once with Brentford, though we lost to Wigan 3-1.
It was great for the club and the fans to have a day out at Wembley, but to be honest, nobody really got excited about the competition until the semi-finals anyway.
Then, the Premier League clubs were brought in. On Tuesday night, Argyle were beaten 5-0 at Home Park by Chelsea’s under-21s.
Now, the deal was that the Premier League put in a bit of money so their youth teams could play in the competition.
That’s all well and good for the Premier clubs, because they get the chance to put their young players into a competitive match.
And I’m sure that some of the clubs lower down the scale are happy they get a bit of extra money.
But is it all really worth it?
There was a crowd of about 1,500 at Home Park on Tuesday.
All right, Argyle have received a bit of cash from the Premier League
But will that money cover the cost of actually putting on a football match when you take into account getting all the staff in, plus the stewards, plus all the other costs involved in putting on a game these days? I wonder.
Whatever money Argyle received from playing against Chelsea the other night, it’s not going to be an excessive amount, I would think.
Argyle have got one more game in the trophy on November 13, away at Newport County.
It’s their last group game, but they can’t go any further because they were beaten in the other two.
In other words, they are going to play in a match which really means nothing, which is not right.
But they are going to have to go and play, or they will be fined.
The rules are that you have to play five players from your previous match – probably a league match – or five players from your next match, which will also probably be a league match.
So against Chelsea, Argyle had at least five players – and probably more – who will play in their team against Sunderland this Saturday.
So let’s have a look at that situation.
rgyle are in the relegation zone and are trying to get out of it.
They are on a good little run at the moment, having won their last two matches, one of them a very good away victory at Scunthorpe.
This weekend, they are playing Sunderland at Home Park, which is a big game for Argyle against a big club, who were in the Premier League two seasons ago.
Whatever the size of the club they are playing, Argyle need the points from this Saturday.
So, are they really going to go for a 50-50 ball in a Checkatrade game in midweek when there is the possibility they will get hurt?
I can’t see that happening, in all honesty.
You want to do your best for the club and the fans and if you are getting two or three players who are needed in the league, that is not doing your best for the club.
The problem is, a club can’t not be in the trophy. Everybody has to do it.
So there’s only one solution: boot the thing into touch. |
