Sad news that the guy has died in an accident on his land. It happens so often in farming areas. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Conviction of views and love for the natural world. Give me one Johnny Kingdom for ten Ben Fogles. Good to see a real under educated man, poacher and all, "succeed" Had a few chats with him on his regular Widdecombe Fair stall, seemed a nice chap.. He'll be missed next week, along with the wag of course. We'll all be gone soon.

Absolutely, met the man a couple of times proper good bloke and hard as nails which I don't just mean in the fighting sense which he was very good at appaza, but in a survival sense. His accident that made him give up the wood, which ws how I met him, was because a pto shaft on his saw table snapped and clouted him in the face and shoulder, it would have killed most normal people. Great character that could tell stories for hours, I will be raising a glass to him this evening, go steady big fella.

Power take off. At the back of a tractor a shaft comes out from the gear box at ninety degrees to the back axle just where it's anus would be if it had one. It's an inch diameter splined shaft which powers a saw bench, mower, dung spreader you name it. The shaft is about three to four feet long an inch diameter whith universal joints and many lumpy bits on it. It's really the last thing you want a smack in the face with at 350rpm.

Used to really enjoy watching this guy on TV. Especially when he was on about his photography skills. His enthusiasm was infectious.

He'll be missed next week, along with the wag of course. We'll all be gone soon. Met him at once when he was signing copies of his book at the Waterstones in Barnstaple. Lovely man, could talk for England and had a definate eye for the ladies. Not many like him left and the lore that he so succesfully shared with the public will be forgetten. |
