| New student accomodation building nomated for 2018 Carbuncle Cup an 'award' that recognises shit architecture, previously by Drake Circus in 2006 [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]The 23 storey building which is the tallest in the South West ensures that the "soulless incoherence that often characterises much of central Plymouth’s post-war reconstruction has been recycled for another generation. | Pretty sure it's a mixture of student and residential. Probably a few high end penthouses on top. |

| I found myself walking down Alma Rd just prior to sunrise one day last week. Beckley Point was obviously lit up. I thought it looked great. Not a ‘Plymouth-type’ building at all...which by and large is a good thing. |

| The gnashing of teeth on the Erold comments section is laughable and sadly predictable. I'm sure Mufferlonions are stuck in some 1970's timewarp. "bleddy orrible" "we don't want that sort of building in Plymuff" " It's an eyesore" "Plymuff is ruined" I think it looks great. it's progressive, modern, a huge improvement on what was there before and above all, a huge investment. More of the same please - Muff really needs to move out of the 17th century and into the 21st. Just my opinion of course, and I don't even live in the Muff! |

It would make sense if they were a mix of student and residential, no way they would fill it with just students. rent in that place is going to be sky high |

but they dont include gas/electricty/internet tv licence so your looking at £600+ a month may aswell rent a whole flat for that. |

| I don’t think it looks too bad as new buildings go. Just another opportunity to kick downtrodden Plymouth If it was built somewhere trendy like Exeter they’d be shouting how fkin wonderful & cutting edge it is. |

I think it looks a lot better in the dark, when it's lit up. The lighting design is decent (although I'm sure I noticed that a few lamps have failed already?) In the daylight, it's not good. Although I thought it was better than some of the other nominations that didn't make the shortlist. The all-orange house was bloody horrible! Yep, that’s sort of the point I was making. At dawn with clear skies behind and the tower still lit up and the building silhouetted, it looks fookin nice. |

| Have I just made this up, or did I read somewhere that the MoneyCentre building ( by Drake Circus there) was going going to be bulldozed and a new ‘tallest tower in Plymouth’ was planned for there? |

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Artsist render of the plan to demolish Corburg House (Money Centre) and replace with this.........................a 21 story student accommodation block. Planning permission has already been granted. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] |

| There was a programme about Plymouth on Radio 4 one day this week: part of a series about 'hot spots', it looked at why we're the city with the highest rate of personal insolvency. An interesting listen (mostly to do with there being so few decent jobs, btw).
Anyway ... Somebody on this programme referred to Plymouth as 'the city that turned its back on the sea' and I've kept thinking about that ever since, because I think she got it bang on. It's getting more and more difficult to see the sea from anywhere, what with Beckley Point (which I can kind of live with, although I too liked the old YMCA building), the new cinema on Bretonside and all the other tall buildings planned and completed, especially in and around the city centre. Most seaside places you can tell you're near the water, even if you can't see it. In Plymouth, there were loads of places you could see it from as you got on with your life, and it was a presence pretty much wherever you were, but it really doesn't feel like that any more. |
