One of the players in the first ever game I saw. I didn't know better in those days so any pro-footballer, especially an Argyle one, was a True Hero. But he was.
You can only wonder at a career trajectory that starts at Rangers and ends up in Plymouth but he was a proper hard right back, without being a nutcase, who could play a bit. A real, proper pro.
He also taught me a new word... I don't recall the opponent but I was stood right at the front as a ball was played towards him by one of ours. It was a shocking pass and despite Provan's best effort he was unable to keep the ball in play and we gave away a needless corner. As the ball went out of play Provan yelled "you feckin sloat!" in exasperation. I'd heard the F word before but had no idea what a "sloat" (slote?) was... To this day I've not heard the word since. I've still got no idea what a sloat is but it can't be good.
